With a sport oriented culture and a population concentrated on its endless coastlines, Australia is a natural location for a thriving surfski community. And as a country of surf lifesaving programs up and down its coasts, it has been one of the fundamental developers of surfskis and surfski paddling and produces many of the world's top surfski paddlers.

Safety

If you are just starting out in downwinding or in a new area to paddle, please seek out some of the very substantial local expertise and knowledge that Australians typically possess for their local waters. The surf lifesavers and paddlers who have paddled locally will know just which locations and conditions you either need to be cautious about or avoid entirely, depending on their severity and your level of skill.

About Safety

  • King Sound - video
  • Talbot Bay - video
  • Brisbane
    • Moreton Bay
      • South Passage Bar - island channel may be too unpredictable for safety due to it shifting sand bars?
  • Melbourne
    • Port Phillip Bay
      • “The Rip” or Port Phillip Bay Heads - can this one be reasonably “timed” or are there too many potential difficulties including traffic in shipping channels?
