Safety: What you should know about local waters

  • Local Knowledge: The surf lifesavers and paddlers who have paddled locally will know just which locations and conditions you either need to be cautious about or avoid entirely, depending on their severity and your level of skill. Local Clubs are a good place to start learning.
  • Crocs: Pay attention to Croc warnings on beaches. Most of Queensland's shoreline is north of the Sunshine Coast. The southern range limit of native crocs is currently (2026) considered to be around Gladstone. Croc range is limited by temperature so it is unlikely to find resident crocodiles much farther south than Gladstone. But it is possible for an itinerant croc to wander farther south and they have been occasionally tracked as far south as the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay.
