Thanks to all for a great turn out on a great day for saltwater racing (although a bit more wind would have made it perfect). I was thinking, after the race, how lucky we all are to have such a great community of paddlers. But then I realized that it doesn't really have much to do with luck, rather, you all made it that way (wonderful) through your volunteerism, joyful participation, encouragement, willingness to help new paddlers, enthusiasm and dedication to a healthy and athletic life on and about the water. Great too that we can share all of this with our equally fine neighbors to the north.
So, what made this race stand out? It was good to see the return of tribal canoes, historic participants in this race but absent for the last several years due to a their busy racing season. Baharav's juniors are becoming frequent participants now and it won't be long before they take the baton from the likes of Don K., Eric W., Kirk, DJ, the Nelsons and all of the other top dogs. It is the natural order of things. The race was so heated that two experienced racers were swimming even before the race started (I shall not name names). Steve Scoggins is moving rapidly up the field, finishing in the top 10, with only a few surf skiers left to pick off. I dropped the ball with 60+ division and, honestly, I don't even know who is 60+ anymore, the ranks swell. I actually tried to buy a stuffed murrelet to create a traveling Ancient Murrelet trophy, but it's surprisingly difficult to find one on Ebay, or anywhere else. Good times, good times. Thanks to all of the volunteers, and our sponsor WECU. Also great to be partnered with the Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center.
I've posted the results below, although this web page messes up the format. A cleaner version will be posted to the Dan Harris web page shortly. Sean Stimac and Vanessa Haycock received 3 minute bonus deduction for stopping to help a paddler in minor distress. Let me know if their are errors. Thanks.

This is just all wrong. The pecking order is suppossed to stay the same until I get back into it. You've got people finishing way faster than they should be. There are upsets all over the place. Change is nOt good.

Watch out, I hear those youngsters are getting fast! Steve even says they're learning how to jump the starting gun, something about Duncan doing some secret sessions with them…dj
Think International Scoring after Leg 1: Dan Harris Challenge

As usual, the home team dominated. USA took the top seven places and was helped immensely by having five women and two juniors participate. Score USA 74, Canada 190 (low score is better). The second leg of the Challenge, the Tour de Indian Arm (May 9th), the home team is Canada, so expect to see a reversal of scores. It should be close. To win, bring three doubles and a lot of women and children to the race!
