race report - Jerico

LB and I did the Jerico race. Not many other surfskis, just two. It was pretty fun watching the OC boats duel. A neat couple drove up from Portland for this race.

Shane M. blasted off in front of the pack after a mixed, mass start into a light breeze against light chop. There were a handfull of OC-2s two OC-1s and the other three surfskis in the front pack. The light chop got more serious out towards the turn mark and consolidated into good two-foot runners. But some of the speedy OC-2s didn't have enough rudder for it and suffered. David H. and partner made their own path back to the finish. So our after-race diagnosis was that the instructions were not chrystal clear. I was a getting some good rides after the turn even though they were not on the fall-line. Unfortunately there were a few swimmers today. A fella in an OC-1 struggled enough to stop Pete W. and partner for several minuts of assistance. Shane M stopped too. I held up for a minute or so waiting for Shane to get going again. It would have soured my race to come in ahead of Shane on this set-up. All racers made it off the water with no complications. For many of us it was a lot of fun. If you worked it right, those little runners would break open some sprints.

It wasn't those rollers across the shallows I've seen a couple of times before, but because these waves consolidate it made for good stuff. I can't think of many soundrower races that give as much of a downwind component.

But now I'm tired. And I'm thinking that the little man in my GPS has a wicked sense of humor - based on the weird route he gave us to Jerico. (Just ask Bob McB - he tried to follow us.)
