HOT 5 Race #4: Team Boats

Kevin Olney
08/20/18 #23676

It’s the penultimate race of the 2018 Hot5! This week week we will race from Cornwall Beach (Glass Beach) and do a 5 mile course based on wind and conditions. The emphasis will be on team competition. Anyone paddling in a boat with more than one paddler will earn +5 points towards their series total.

If you are looking for a partner or have a double with an empty seat please let me know. Let’s try and get everyone teamed up!

There is still plenty of racing left in the series and the prize pool keeps growing. Chuckanut Brewery has graciously donated some sweet gear and Ocean Paddlesports has hooked us up with equipment, hats, shirts and tons of stoke!

Registration is at 5:00
Race: 6:00

Afterwards we will fire up the BBQ. Chicken and hot dogs provided. Bring a side if you want.

Only $5 per boat!!

Week 4 Race Report

It was a great evening on the bay. The gentle breeze pushed away the smoke and haze and the sun shone through for the first time in a long time. 10 doubles lined up to race the 5 mile course, along with a few singles and one OC-6.

Cryder and Wilson took an early lead followed by Nelson/Landboe and Ana/Tom Swetish. Not far behind Peter and Eric battled ahead of the 6-man. Next up was a tight pack lead by Thom and Dennis and including John/Denise, Dean/Devon and “Walt”.

Duncan and Bob were dicing it up back and forth with Kim and Julie.

Roger and Paul R went solo and Josh “Awesome Dad” Dyck chauffeured his daughter Hailey around the course, much to her delight.

In the end it was team Go Mammas Go! that showed their stamina and took home the overall win (Heather’s second in as many weeks!). The weeds took their toll on Peter and Eric and they fell behind the OC-6 but still topped their division.

Unfortunately, we had our first timing failure in the series so only the first couple times were recorded. I feel sad and embarrassed. Next year we will hire an out of state company to run everything for $12,000 and they can screw it up. Not really. But we will get a second stop watch.

The finishing order is accurate so the integrity of the points standings is still intact.

We had teriyaki chicken and hot dogs afterwards (thanks Tom H for saving the day on that one) and partied for a while there in the parking lot. The BPD cruised by a couple times but since we weren’t shooting smack or passing out in the bushes they didn’t mind our shenanigans.

I think the biggest takeaway from the evening is that doubles are really fun. You can go faster with your buddy. You can take out your wife/girlfriend/kid/dad even if they don’t have much paddling experience.

Thanks to Tom H, Neil, Peter, Brandon, Chris, Scoggins, Tyler and everybody who showed up to race! I had a lot of fun. I hope you did too!

Next week is the Season Finale. The tentative course will be a lap around Chuckanut Island from Marine Park. However, if the conditions are favorable, we will set up a downwind course with shuttles provided. Stay tuned for updates…
