With a little help from Queen Victoria (God save the Queen), Team USA eked out a 5th straight win in the Think International Challenge. If Team Canada had been able to field a fifth double (presumably missing because potential racers were off celebrating the Queen's holiday/long weekend) the Challenge would certainly have gone their way. Without a doubt, Team Canada carried the day, winning the 2nd leg of the Challenge by the score of 269.5 (USA) to 173.5 (Canada); low score wins. But that wasn't enough to overcome their deficit from the first leg: Final Score: USA 434.5, Canada 448.5.
Team USA fielded a small team this year, only 15 racers crossed the border to race. In our defense, there are probably only 17 or 18 of us down here that are even allowed in Canada anyway. Standouts included the first place overall tandem team of Peter M. and Joost Z. Both our mixed doubles (Paul C./Elana and Arthur/Arthur) were in the mix too, placing 6th and 7th overall, respectively. Kirk Christensen was our top single HPK, placing 4th in the category…nipped at the wire by Shane Martin for a spot on the podium. Jeff Hegedus's last minute decision to go long-course also helped us as he was able to hang on and beat Canada's 4th double team.
The seas were light, some current, small waves, occasional boat wakes. It rained all day, and hard enough that the beer I was drinking at the awards ceremony would fill back up after every sip. Luckily, I was drinking a Molson, so I couldn't really taste any difference. For the second straight race in a row I won a life vest in the post-race raffle (perhaps I'll actually start wearing one now), but that was nothing compared to Dean Bumstead winning a tree pruning tool at the raffle. Ha!
Well, that's all for now amigos, see some of you at the Ski to Sea!

I forgot to add that it was, as usual, a well-run race and thanks to Bob and his crew!
