Main Vancouver Island Page

Port San Juan is an almost rectangular shaped inlet and bay about a 100 km drive from Victoria, BC. up the southwest coast of Vancouver Island. Sparsely populated, there is the small village of Port Renfrew on the south side of the inlet not far from the mouth of the San Juan river.

Wikipedia - “ … a variety of recreational activities such as fishing, kayaking, and birding. The surrounding mountains and coastline are home to a variety of hiking trails, most notably the West Coast Trail to the north and Juan de Fuca Marine Trail to the southwest. The San Juan Valley to the east is home to numerous old growth forests and many of Canada's largest and oldest trees.”

Launches

  • If you go to the east end of Port San Juan where there are some large parking areas for beach walkers and campers, it is a bit of a carry to get your boat to the water. It's possible that you might be able park closer to the shore at the north end of this long beach, but we have not checked that out.
  • On the east end of Port Renfrew at Pacific Gateway Marina there is a boat ramp with parking. If you go east on the dirt road there next to the shore you can park on grass/dirt reasonably close to the water and carry your boat down to the shore, through the clump of trees where the land juts out to the north. (at least this was possible in 2023)

Surf

Good surfing conditions may also coincide with the good waves going into the Port San Juan Bay at Port Renfrew?
