Interesting Ice Paddle …

I just got off the lake (Whatcom) and I've never seen so much ice. Paddled towards Bloedel from the Agate Bay area. There was an aluminum power boat just slowly exiting the ice near the south end of the race course so I entered the path he had created. I expected a super thin layer and was stunned to find it a full inch thick (yes I measured). I kept stopping to ooh and ahh while snapping a couple pics. Was amazing to hear the ice tinkling and cracking as I moved through. Then I soon realized the path that had been created was all disappearing as the ice sheets closed back in around me. Oops! I had a heck of a time trying to turn around and to inch my way back out. Kept wondering if it was thick enough and sharp enough to rip holes in my boat, so I was being pretty tentative. With my feet in the water (to help push the ice sheets), my boat icing over, and darkness settling in, it was slightly unnerving (and cold) … but sorta awesome at the same time. Anyway, made it back home under a gorgeous twilight sky and was once again thankful we get to paddle in so many different conditions. My toes are still cold though …

Wow Rick…that sounds like a scene out of Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala. Dersu Uzala - Kurosawa - 1975 - Video Dailymotion
