OC-2-Palooza – A "Smashing" Success!

The 1st Annual OC-2-Palooza kicked off with a bang… or a “grind” or “smash”, choose your verb. We had 7 or 8 OC-2s on the water with pairings never before seen, including Rick and Joost, Peter M. and Thom Prichard, and most of the usual single bladed warriors dicing it up together, Bob M. and Dan C., Susan and David, Lance and Gabe, sorry if I'm forgetting anyone.
All but one boat had somewhat of a race, changing leads a few times with Lance and Gabe coming out of the gate like wild stallions, and Joost and Rick – never once in an OC-2 together before last night – hanging tough as nails near the front of the pack.
It was an expensive night for some, though, including Heather and I. We brought home a 12-inch crack in the hull after cutting it too close to the reflector on the back stretch, and finding the piling at top speed. Edoh and Dan Mosely found a solid object as well, and blew out the side-seam on Edoh's ama.
That is pack racing, though, and although the sound of crunching composite is heart-wrenching, I for one will take a hit and a repair now and again as an inevitable part of the lifestyle. That's the beauty of boats: they're infinitely repair-able.
As far as the “one boat” that was really off in a world of its own: Brian Boatman and Eric Gerstl. I think they were home and showered before the next OC-2 crossed the line. “Nice racing” doesn't quite fit, as “racing” usually involves a 2nd boat somewhere in the same zip code. 
Nice time-trialing, boys!
And nice gathering of a fun boat class, All. There were 3 tandem skis and a tandem CLC double kayak out there, too. Power to the pairs!!!

You guys are all a bunch of roller-bettys. I haven't had that much fun on flat water in a long time. It used to make me nuts when Shearer would let his 'crazy davy' out and play crash-em with all our expensive toys.
But, dang, that was a rock-a-hula good time. I wanna OC-2 now. Hmm, not the place to have your K-1 out.
What's next Brandon? Do some more! inner-tube w/ swim-fin regatta? surfski w/ canoe paddle? Peter: ideas for food-bank race?
