Tour De Indian Arm 2014

David, although you were not there, the yanks did prevail! The tandem team Wermus/Ecker were 2nd overall - the only ski ahead of them was another tandem paddled by a Canadian powerhouse team. Top singles were Kiesling and Kirk!. Local stars like Bumstead, Whitlock, Schulz, and more did super well.

It was sunny and warm. The place was packed and of course parking was a bugger. I am so programmed for 10am starts I was there way too early, so got a great parking spot and a huge omelette breakfast. Several vendors were set up. Lots of SUP racers and some of these guys were dang fast. Thank goodness they stuck to the short course. One of the vendors was a powdered sport mix. There was a nice looking lady there, so I probably drank too much of the free samples. Low sugar, low caffeine, high electrolytes. (The drink not the girl.)

Race organization was pretty good. Bob set up a little lady with a giant megaphone and she was taking no crap from anyone. Start line looked fair to me. In fact I had a good start and found myself drafting guys too fast for me. Ended up dicing with a guy who probably hadn't been racing a lot. He slowed a bit in the cross chop when we crossed the channel. Had a nice looking kayakers' low brace. Also, when I tried to pull he would hammer like crazy so I don't think he knew when to ride wash. He started his finish kick way early and gapped us. I started closing after a bit, but could not zero the gap before the finish. But I felt good and was able to work hard the entire race. I felt that big breakfast so was rumbly in me tumbly for the first half.

Whatcom Classic was a bummer for me: I just wilted at 1/2 point as I've done a few times before. I see the H.R. droop to 120 and can't seem to work. I'm doing something wrong for these races over 60 minutes. I talked to the energy drink people after race and it sounds like I'm loading too heavy before and during the long races with carbs. Might be age related. In my 40's I could eat a large pizza before and during a race while hammering as hard as I wanted. Another thing in their drink is lots of organic anti-inflammatories. The stuff worked for me.

After race was fun. Lots of roasting the winners and joking between yanks and canucks. Lots of schwag (must be present to win Elana & Erik!). SUP paddle, PFD, some Tony Bahama beach chairs and lots of hats, water bottles and stuff. They fed us BBQ burgs and even snuck a keg into the park. Nice day. Border crossing was great with Nexus, but didn't look like much w/o nexus.
