I would really like to see a race report on this one. Glad to see this event is being kept alive.

Cool to see all our local burly OC paddlers going off and pulling big water. I've dueled with many of these OC beasts around here. I think it was a Jerico race years ago where it was made clear to me that these guys can ride big waves just as good as a surfski. Just my opinion, but catching wave energy really narrows the speed gap between various boats. (Therefore I try to get all my gloating done on the Wed Niters - and sorta move to the back of the room when it's really big conditions races.)

Five of us Bellinghamsters teamed up to race an OC2. We had a great time. The weather was perfect. The people were friendly. The wind was always at our backs. There were surfable waves 20% of the time.

The turnout was light this year. There were 8 OC2s, a handful of OC6s and an OC1 but no double blades. Brad Clement said that a few of the usual suspects were injured, including himself.

We realized we had a shot to win when we launched into the lead at the start and held it for a couple of miles before an OC6 came along side. We transitioned faster at the first checkpoint and I think we lead the rest of the race, which makes it hard to give much of a report because all we did was paddle like hell and wonder what's going on behind us.

Lance kissed the peach after 8 hours and 23 minutes. We were first overall. It might be the first time any of us won a race outright. What now? Do we need an agent? Can we sell Fenn surfskis too?

The prizes included the usual bouquet of wine, beer and honey. There's still a trophy for the OC6 division but nothing but pride and alcohol for the rest. We ate well at the banquet which was held in the Lakeside Casino and Resort (and nightclub), located on the water next to the peach.

For those who haven't done the race before, it covers 100 beautiful kilometers on Lake Okanagan from Vernon to Penticton. It's a 5 leg relay but it can be ironed. The wind is typically at your back but don't let anyone tell you that it's a downwind race because every few years there is a brutal headwind.

The turnout varies. Some years there are twice as many teams entered as this year. It would be nice to see more of you there next year.

Personally, I'd like another chance at the Anderson brothers. A couple of years ago they ironed it and beat our 5 person team. It still hurts.
