The Pre-Paddle Grand Prix #2 Point Series Race went off with style and CRAZY demonstrations of speed tonight. The group has chosen to keep things competitive by playing a bit of musical boards. So tonight the Bark 18 ended up under Joost Zeeger’s control, Beau Whitehead showed up on his 12’6” Naish, Brian Boatman on a Swetish 12’6”, and Heather on the eyebrow-raising-and-wildly-fast 12’6” Starboard “New” courtesy of Bellingham Kite Paddle Surf.
Remember, last week Allan Lipp took the overall win, Brian Boatman on the Bark 18 was second, and Joost on the Swetish 12’6” was 3rd.
Well, tonight Joost paddled to a decisive victory on the 18, with Beau about 75 yards back, then – making the ladies proud – Heather crossed the line on the “New” a mere 38 seconds behind Beau after near 50 minutes of paddling!!! Following her was Allan Lipp, then Dale Plant, followed by Brian Boatman. Jessica Yoos finished 2nd woman, Michele Anderson 3rd woman, and husband-and-wife team out of Anacortes Brian and Susanne Holmes finished their first race ever in an applaud-earning 1 hour 11 minutes!!! This was a tightly grouped field for 4.3 miles of racing, and goes to show that with every extra race the entire community of SUP paddlers increases their collective skill-set.
Nice racing, everyone!!! See you next week back at Lake Padden!!!

What a “fun” race! I only say “fun” because it actually hurt a little. Trying to chase down Joost was a chore. As I approached the fist turn, I heard someone behind me, but didn't look back until I was rounding the corner… it was Heather! Like 30 feet behind me and looking fresh. Now we all know Heather is stronger than most men, but until last night she never really got to show it because she is not always on the fastest SUP board. Well that changed last night! So now I had TWO goals, catch Joost and not get caught by Heather… both took a little more effort than I had planned on giving. Didn't catch Joost, and BARELY held off Heather. Ouch. Hope I have something left for the Seattle race tonight. Well done everybody!
