First of all: great race org. 1) Safely done. 2) awesome conditions. 3) crisply done race start, fast hot food, speedy awards follow up.
Conditions were a stretch for most. I felt a little beat up and loved it. There's plenty of lake races (flat). I hate it when the rowers do a Peppy LePew and go like stink. My GPS max showed a 9.9mph. Another way to say it: this isn't just a fitness sport, it's an adventure sport. I love that raw edge of trouble. I don't envy the race director, but for me Rybzck gave us a smokin hot number this year.
Really cool to have all the big dawgs. Greg B is always a favorite, great to see young Austin kicking it, and of course all those feisty Can-do-ians. Wish it was easier for the Vancouver Island crowd to get down here. That would tilt the results different.
I had some start line issues: like being there on time. At least I wasn't as late as Duncan. Once I got rolling things improved. I got myself velcro'd up to amercan Darrel, can-doian Daryl and kim C. Kim did the pull down to the island, then we lost him like a bunch of sleazy wash riders. A couple of times candoian Daryl would catch a little ride and squirt ahead like a watermelon seed. This was a tiding of things to come and once he got out in the big he was on-form. The decision on coming back North was outside vs inside. I still don't know which was best - I sorta lined for the #2 buouy. But halfway back I saw that David S was fading. So I snuck up like a butterfly with sore feet. Once I got close I yelled “DAVEEE!!!” cuz I know how that irritates him. It was great fun. I learned that from him. The next big thing was seeing Marc W decide on a swimming leg. He had made it through all the heavy stuff and things were starting to settle. I noticed that can-do-ian Daryl checked on him, so I did my little sneaky-sneak and got by Marc. (Daryl was on to my tricks.) Right there around the #2 buoy things were untidy with the father-son Fast men - I think I obstructed their line a bit. I saw Daryl take the outside line, so I tacked inside. To my surprise there were good little runners inside the bay. It was painful, but I could get sprints on these. I noticed that the waves were not always friendly to doubles. Sure enough there was a can-doian mixed double up ahead and I had a gut-busting finish with them to cap off a fantastic adventure.
Great to have the venue, the conditions and the excellent support from Epic and Think. (And others, even Bob P.) Couldn't have better race adversaries than our Northern Neighbors. Loved the 10yr winners podium and the hats. Although Duncan somehow managed to affix the word “Doesn't” on front of his new Think hat.
I can tell this is going to be a stand up season for races.

Thanks to all racers for a great turnout and especially to all the volunteers (whom I forgot to thank publicly at the awards ceremony). I liked the new inside-the-bay short course. It was certainly more fun for the spectators since we saw those racers four times. I think I'll keep that modification and hopefully it will encourage more rowers (who like the calmer water) and newer paddlers (who need the calmer water). There was still plenty of wind and surf for those short coursers, by the way.
I liked the long course change too, the comments were favorable, so we'll keep that modification as well. This was probably the first race where I really wished I was racing instead of directing. I love those kinds of conditions in the big, fat Huki R. My scout boats indicated that it was much cleaner until about 10:10 am. Winds were directly and only out of the south and the swells were smooth and unidirectional. Then those squalls came in and mixed things up a bit. Oh well. I will never forget the sight of Duncan, at precisely 10:00 a.m., when I was supposed to blow that start horn, paddling up to the start line, in the WRONG direction, with all of the other racers facing him and itching to go. It reminded of that lone Chinese student holding back the tanks at Tianaman Square. I didn't have it in me to sound the horn until he got turned around. But I did think about it!
Anyway, I've posted the results below. We lose some of the formatting when I post directly here, but we're also getting the results up on the Dan Harris web page soon. I'll let you know when that happens. I'm still adding up the points for the Think International Challenge, but I need a beer and a nap right now. I'll post that score tomorrow. Let me know if you see anything wrong with the results.

Did you lose your booties at DHC
Bob Putnam

We found a pair of booties, real stinkers too, by the side of the road after leaving the Dan Harris Challenge. We didn't know what to do with them so we took them to Canada. You'll have to come and participate in the Tour De Indian Arm if you want to retrieve them. Please do so quickly as they are destroying the air quality in Canada. They are likely from one of the bigger dudes. Maybe Kirk's, probably not big enough for Brandon's dogs. They were likely left on the roof of somebody's car. I've never done that before.
Thanks to John R for organizing a great race. Conditions made it interesting and I like the route change. I heard some community members expressing some fatigue with the challenges of having to rally the troops for the Think International Challlege. I can sympathize, but don't despair, I think its a great event to bring two enthusiastic paddling communities together even if Canada gets its ass kicked every year. The effort you make helps grow the sport. It helps achieve the goal of encouraging younger paddlers, and encouraging women paddlers. Its good for the sport.

Those belong to Kim Cantrell!

I noticed a peculiar odor wafting from the direction of the Cantrell van, no other vehicles parked within fifty feet, and paddling shoes stuck just above the front bumper. I noticed dogs sniffing then fleeing the scene in haste.
No offense to Kim, he's just like that. However, the guys (Canadian were they?) who picked them up worry me a bit. They got that stuff over the border to Canada? Go figure

Well not really, I completely lost my as- in that race,( not my bootie) Shouldn't do that course if your not feeling up to snuff. However, thanks John for pulling that event together, getting those chase boats out there is not easy, but certainly reassuring. Course change worked well, now we have new records. D
