Erik,
The system looks pretty bomber, but the carabiner pictured would be a bit problematic around salt-water.The springs don't last very long, even on the marine versions. There are some good safety hooks on safety tethers used on offshore sailboats, but they are very pricey. I might go with a snap shackle in place of the “biner”. There are some good options in the on-line West Marine catalog. I'd probably get one with a swivel so that the line wouldn't kink. Wash the system down with fresh water between uses.

This is genius. Ive been wondering how to get off the double leash system - wrinkles to work out:

1) In extremes the mid-boat anchor point can be hell due to boat sail effect. 2) There needs to be a way to disconnect under load. (Carabiner would require slack). My favorite alternative to caribiner here is a brass or SS clasp hook. Its a swivel eye and two opposing hooks that close 'over-center' so it won't open under strain or twist action. But the action uses a little lever thingy. Not sure cold hands could work it loose under duress.

I bought a kite-board leash with very sly quick-release. Unfortunately too many hypothermic brain cells prevent me from jiggering it up in a system I really trust.

loosing rudder, boat or paddle is ghost-buster bad (like crossing the streams of their bug-zapper things). loosing brain cells? no biggie. i got some more around somewhere ….
