Mmm, currently at airport , gusting 64, steady 40, and 32 gusting 58 at locust beach, haven't seen that in awhile. Dan you out there today?

I'm not sure if I was shaking from the wind or if I was nervous for the paddlers. Taken from Post Point at about 12:30.

Dan 1.0 would have been tempted. Dan 2.0 took one look at the conditions and went for a hike.

Perhaps it’s time for a discussion about understood and agreed limits to safety. No problem with skill levels demonstrated and appreciated. Unexpected happens under extreme conditions and suddenly others are forced into an increasingly dangerous situation…I’ll just start with something like..when gusting 55, no go… regardless
Impute?

A great point David.
I think everyone in the group who paddled came off the water feeling like that was more than they bargained for.
And I did not intend to normalize paddling in these sorts of conditions by posting this - I would hope that it would have the opposite effect actually!

Gusts at 55 are no joke. My normal limit is sustained 30s with gusts to 40. Some of the forecasts were above that but I still wanted to go, so I opted to paddle the V8 and paddled with a group of experienced OC guys. We had a hard time staying grouped up, there were a couple hulis, and I went for a swim just off of Squalicum beach. It was an exciting and fun experience but I can see all kinds of scenarios where it could have been seriously not good. Probably won't roll those dice again.
