Too Much West and North Makes Wildcat Run Go South

Downwind 4/4
Kimberly Reeves Apr 4 #31354

Pulled into MP and checked the conditions around noon. It was pushing westerly on shore but looked SW out by the buoy. Denise, Brian F, Eric W and I loaded the boats and headed to MP.

As we were driving past Chuckanut Bay, all of us looked out the truck windows and you could here an audible sigh in the rig…bay looked flat and we were headed to a 5ish mile flat paddle against the ebb.

Got to WC and the waves were more W than S. As we paddled out Denise and I joked about doing laps there, but when we looked, Brian and Eric were headed south. So we buckled up and being the good lemmings we are followed suit.

Saying that these were the worst conditions I’ve paddled in would not be an exaggeration. As we headed north, the waves became bigger breaking waves, ama side, from the west that kept pushing us inside. Then, if things couldn’t get better, we got hammered by a high wind squall outta the north. High winds, hail and haystacks had us thinking about tucking behind Chuck Island and waiting out the storm…that woulda been the smart move. Well, not a smart one in this group today :)

We continued heading back to the barn, hitting huge rebound from the wall and being continually pushed to the east. As we finished up another delightful squall came through with gusts that felt like upper 40+ that was super fun while we were trying to get the canoes on terra firma. As luck would have it, once we got dry and passably warm, the sun came out and the bay settled down. I guess Mother Nature wanted to remind us who was boss.
