Time to Whine - Snowing and Cold

Thanks to DJ and Kristen for putting together a great dinner party. Awesome food, especially after yesterday's intervals. It was a shame that I couldn't stay for the 'meeting' about the July Madness but I presume that we need to just get out and miles under our belts.

Now about those intervals. The last 3 weeks that we have gone from Bloedel and down around the island and back, it was a good healthy workout. However, yesterday's paddle was just plain uncomfortable. Besides Shaun, Brandon and me, we were joined bu Hilburn, Marcus, Reivers, and Dean “I'll bring my tippiest boat” Bumstead. I knew that we were headed for disaster when Brandon left his pogies back at the car and Dean was piloting his Fenn Mako. It was a little chilly when we left (38F) and calm but we ran into a south wind and snowstorm just before we hit Sudden Valley. Still, the conditions did not warrant any whining just yet. After we rounded the island and looked north, we could see nothing. It was just a huge whiteout and now the wind was blowing against us once again. How can you paddle upwind one way and then turn and paddle upwind the other way? As we neared the stormy part of the lake, the snow was getting heavy, the wind was blowing harder (from our right now), and the temp had dropped significantly. Now it was time to whine. It was hard to do intervals with the waves hitting us on the beam so we had to slow down a bit and since we weren't paddling our hardest, we were getting real cold fast. My hands were cold inside my pogies and Brandon had to stop and put on extra clotes just so the extra warmth might help thaw his frozen hands. We slowed even more while we waited for Brandon to catch up and we could see Reivers up ahead and he had layed his paddle down and looked like he was crying. Finally Brandon showed up and he had broken one of his V-10 steering cables at a most inopportune time. So this motley crew limped it's way back to Bloedel with tails between our legs. See you next Sunday for more fun….
