I didn't get any down winders this year. The wind didn't work, mostly rain.
Last year was great. I did a Maliko run where they said the swell was 15'. Basically mountains moving beneath you with wind waves on top going at a different direction. Like you and Jeff mentioned, trying to catch the wind waves to gain enough speed to drop down the swell. I did catch a few swell drops but mostly negotiating not really used to being in that kind of water.
There was about 8 of us and I really didn't see much of them, we were miles out. The landmarks are the mountains then the crane lining up with the harbor mouth. Too close to the right ends up over the reef into Hokipa. The following week it was breaking 50' at Jaws just next door to Maliko put in, too big to go.
Surfing is fun, I surfed mainly the Kahalui Harbor where the swell comes in from the Maliko run. They are channeled though the harbor mouth so the size is dropped and since it's shallower stacks up, eventually breaking.
Head high and smaller.
Here's a smaller day, the morning before I left. It's better to stick to the shoulder where it's slower to break. If you broach and fall out the wave takes the boat and can break the leash. I was fortunate the wave passed under the boat after the leash broke and I was able to catch it, not that easy with the paddle.
