We awoke early on January 20th and packed up the hydration system for the crossing to Isla Cerralvo, an Island 10 miles across the bay. It is a spectacular trip to an uninhabited island with beautiful beaches. Only goats live there, and sometimes the locals go hunting for them. We didn't see any goats.
We left at 6am. It was still dark. We paddled over in a couple of hours. We saw a large sea lion and had lots of flying fish dart over our boats. The sunrise to the south on our right was stunning. It came up slowly in the first 30 minutes or so of the trip. Pinks and reds and oranges against the blue sky and black hills. Slowly, the island approached. It was so gorgeous……no one but us on this beach that you see in the pictures. We arrived just before 8am. No one else was on the island, as far as we knew.
The pongas (long open fiberglass boats with outboard motors that the locals use for fishing) arrived shortly afterward, full of stand up paddle boarders who were doing a race back. We went over today to be with the paddle boarders, since there was motor boat backup. The water was glassy the whole way over, with large slow swells from the north. You slowly bob up and down as they pass under you. It is lucky that neither of us get seasick in these conditions. Eyes on the horizon!
We arrived on the island on the beautiful beach (a few photos of our boats and the beach-apologize they are just of poppa) and hung out for an hour or so. Before 9am we left again to paddle back as the SUP racers took off. Warren and I stayed together for the “race” back and enjoyed being with a paddling buddy. The water was still spectacular…..no wind that day so it was perfect. You can see where you are going across the water nearly the whole way back.
We arrived back in LaVentana just before 11:00 am. I think it was about 22 miles overall.
Coming home tomorrow. Miss you all like great mexican food.
Love,
