4/17 Tues 'Ol Barnacle Run

Reivers Dustin
04/17/18 #22760

Big ebb running. Steady SW breeze. Might be good. If wind stays like this the rebound near the wall is extra spicy. Waves in the mirror can be larger than they appear because the fetch is across the bay from Eliza. Only problem is that some of your favorite old barnacles pretended they were much younger last night at Peter's Padden Pain Party. But, so there. like me dear brother says, “any day above ground is a good day.” or “don't knock it if you can't try it.” or you can pick any number of his other malapropalistic, crusty, old, wry observations. rd

glorious runs, broke everyone's GPS. Maybe these are the condition flags for good waves: 1) big ebb flow, 2) wind steady from SW, 3) nobody expecting anything.

I put on my full wetsuit today. Had to get help from Rapid Robert. Hope nobody got that on video. Aint pretty when an old guy wiggles around that way. Even worse getting the dang thing off. Mark had to undo some thingies on it. But I have to say, it was fantastic to paddle in. Really wet rides today and going upwind we all got face-slapped plenty. With me full suit on I felt invincible.

But man it was cold, and the head wind and my hands got so cold I had to quit. Just not as strong and tough as the other Silvers. But—if we had waited till now, still great wind ,flood tide, just a little more SE which makes for easier up wind. Steve and Simon are heading out now, be good to compare reports.

But going later in day probably interferes with naps, or may mean none at all, and that could be catastrophic ending in a 3 day forced recovery period. D

It was so good, I felt the need to write a Haiku about it:

Pedestrians impede the journey
Water splashing my face
Can't raise my arms to answer phone.

Try again … not a haiku :)

Look, I can sometimes handle all the joy y’all experience without me, which are shared on this email distribution list. I can, at times, handle the banter back and forth, though at times it seems like some of y’all share things rather insignificant to this group like “well, I had a loose, watery stool today, but I’m still going paddling…”.

But that was not a haiku. If you’re going to flaunt the fact that you have more time to paddle than the rest of us, get your poetry straight.

Oh Matt……
Once you get used to hanging with a group of people who paddle in cold water sloppy surfing conditions with eel grass and limited egress points, the only mark of excellence left to talk about is doing all the stuff I just mentioned WITH watery stools.

That's my Haiku.

Matt…..I'm sorry that you didn't like my Haiku. It was meant as a joke and was never considered serious poetry. It was a great day to be on the bay and my post was meant in jest. As for having more time to paddle than you, I seriously doubt that you know me. I work more than full time in a busy hospital and I am frequently on call after hours. Besides this, I also teach physics one full day a week. My free time is scarce and I often don't get home until after 11 pm at night. Out of the 495 members on this site, one said they my Haiku wasn't really Haiku (and he is also a teacher) and one was offended. I'm also one of the moderators for this site, and the one thing we frown upon is when a member slams another member. We've been known to DC memberships when someone gets snippy without cause. WP began with a group of 15 local paddlers that wanted to stay connected. I am one of those 15.

Larry et al,

I am very sorry. As soon as I sent that email, I regretted it. You are right: I don’t know you, and I shouldn’t make any assumptions about anyone on this list.

In truth, I’d love to be able to do what y’all do. But I’m very much a beginner, following my daughter as she paddles along, and I have very little time to learn this very challenging sport. I went out on the bay in December this year and realized how close I am to death whenever I try this, which both fascinates and terrifies me, but gives me a tremendous amount of respect for all the folks who are able to do it already.

But while I don’t know how to paddle (yet), I do know literature, and so when something familiar showed up in an email, I snapped. That doesn’t excuse my behavior, but I hope it explains it, a little.

Anyway, I’m grateful for the kindness to each other in these email group, I’m deeply embarrassed that I took it in a different direction, and I’m sorry to you Larry and this group,

Matt McCoy

So I had to refresh my knowledge of haiku. Here's my response:

Fun day on the bay
Goolsby attempts to haiku
shit hits the fan hard

Edit. In keeping with the watery stool theme, line three should read:

Wet stool hits the fan

As long as we're airing grievances, I'd like a word with whoever's in charge of the wind for Sunday.

I've got to side with Matt in all of this.

You would think that with the absurd amount of time you guys spend paddling while us working grunts sit here in our offices silently cursing you while being envious of you for getting all the good wind, you shouldl have the proper amount of time in your day to know the basic structure of a Haiku. I mean, what in the world do you guys talk about when you're out there? You can only spend so much time talking about your various bodily functions.

And I thought you barnacles were “cultured.”

Interesting. Knowing Matt, knowing Goolsby, and knowing a few others…..

Had we all been talking in person, I think you'd have heard the intonation of Matt's voice, saw the smile that came at the appropriate times, and would have been laughing. I read it very differently.

Thumbs up for every haiku attempt submitted so far.

Haiku prescriptivism, really? My quick googling of haiku indicates that modern haiku has gotten away from the more traditional patterns like 5-7-5 and even the old masters did not strictly follow such rules. And forget about being so rigid about attempts in English anyway. Japanese haikus, with their pronunciation of so many consonants in the meter count, can seem to me like a different creature entirely.

This is my take away; no Haikus for me. I’m gonna straight-up gangsta-rap the s#%t out of my next mid-week Run report.

The whole Haiku thing was a hoot! Not only was it funny, but the responses were from such a diverse group. High school to Silvers. I asked Larry G and Reivers this morning if anybody but us read the sight….., now I guess I know. Don't ask me to haiku however, I flunked that class. Both times.
