Yesterday, with the westerlies predicted, found me at my usual haunt for those conditions: Birch Bay.
I got there at about 9:30AM and it was honking! WNW winds of 20-25 mph combined with a 4 to 5 foot groundswell coming down from the Georgia Strait made for some screaming rides on the Swordfish that I'm purchasing from Simon. What a way to put a new ski through roughwater testing. The combination of fast moving groundswell and steeper but slower moving windswell made for some sketchiness, with me managing to perform a couple broaches, a pearl diving session, and a stall at the top of the wave. All was good, until the last run in, when I took a swim, but the remount was easy.
I was so ecstatic about the conditions that when I got in, I called Cryder, Scoggins and texted Tom S., that they really should get their butts out there! Not sure if anyone did, though.
You just don't get conditions like that in Bellingham, Having groundswell to play with makes a huge difference to anyone traveling to do ocean races anywhere.
