Great news! Bellingham Canoe & Kayak Sprint Team (BCKST) is a reality. It is a youth program that promotes access to sprint paddling, Olympic style, by offering classes and training to youth ages 9-18. All participants, including youth with disabilities, will have the opportunity and be encouraged to race and compete.
The home of BCKST is Lake Padden, where the boats are stored, and where we practice and race. BCKST is a nonprofit operation and it is a member of the USA Canoe and Kayak organization. BCKST training sessions will begin in mid-June, 2013. To all devoted parents and grandparents within the paddling community, please inform your beloved young athletes about BCKST and its fun and competitive opportunities. Come and join the program.
Registration to join BCKST will begin soon. Please contact me for more information about the youth program and how to sign up. Meanwhile BCKST needs some help. We are looking for boats. Any sprint kayak and sprint canoe, single or multiple, old or in any shape that you haven't used in a while and that you can share with the team, will be much appreciated. We will use it and at the same time will keep it for you at Lake Padden. I'm sure that some of these boats are still great for sprint paddle fundamentals. Also, we can use any old 8'-14' kayaks or unused old surfski. If you have canoe and kayak paddles that are not in use we definitely can use them. Please check out BCKST website www.bellinghamcanoekayak.org for more information and insight.
Also check out your calendar: BCKST Inaugural Regatta will take place at Lake Padden, June 15, 2013, a Saturday. The Regatta is open to sprint canoe and kayak, surfski, OC, and SUP. There will be 200m, 500m 1000m, 2K and 5K races. The Regatta is open to all ages. As for now 5 youth sprint teams, 3 from Washington and 2 from BC, are attending.. It should be great fun and a great way to start a sprint canoe and kayak competition in Bellingham.
Your cooperation is appreciated, Thanks,
Dan Baharav, Founder and Director
