I have been hearing harrowing tales about the small boats race in Victoria on sunday. There were no surfski's, only OC's. Two friends of mine from Nanaimo went and said these were the worst conditions they have ever paddled in. Half of the OC's had to be rescued. Wolf said he was literally crapping his pants in the 10 - 12 foot multi directional waves and was questioning his decision as to why he would pay to do something like this. The CG bailed him out along with others. Darren Good who is an excellent OC paddler and very experienced in big conditions said he was also crapping his pants. Ron Williams, our “ old man of the sea ” was one of the few who made the finish. Jonas jumped into an OC last minute being the only surfski there, he hasn't been in one in a few years but also made the finish.
The race went out around Trial island where there is extreme current. Combined with the 20 - 30 knot winds this made for epic conditions. All survived though.
Shiela watched from a safe spot on the hillside and said she was glad she was not out there.
