San Francisco US National Champs Race Reports

The reign of terror continues ...

Reivers Dustin
08/21/10 #9073

So I beat the Larrys. Never mind that I could not blink for the first hour of the race. It was chunky monkey all over the place. The wind picked up like Dale mentioned and with the slight ebb it was different than I've ever seen. It was a bit surprising who all took a dip. I was dueling with a guy we met down here named Jeff and by golly Jeff took a swim. He came back strong, but I caught a better wave at the finish.

At the pre-race they said if you don't get a good first half out and back to Ft Baker, then you better bail out on the race. Kathleen wisely did just that. MG stayed strong and we counted his nobby head coming across the finish. LB finished strong, but was found muttering profanities and wandering around in the parking lot. LG picked in between lines rather than gamble and ended up with a mid-pack finish. I finished ahead of him so he says I'm walking back - no ride home for me. It was worth it.

DJ smoked the first part of the course, but could not keep the hammer down. I would give a nut for his race, but he is subdued about it and not his usual bubbly self. Morris and Kirk must have stories - hope they share with us about some. For most of us it was the sum of mistakes that told the result. Because it was rough on every segment people were scattered all over the place. Now that we are done and have beer in us we think we could do it in half the time.

We met Penny from Australia before the race. She needed some reassurance so we told here it wasn't too bad once you got back under the G.G. Now she thinks we are all terrible liars and gives us this kind of shattered look. Kim H. had an awesome race and bounced up for her award as if she was ready to do it all again.

Debbie is bringing home hardware - I think its a medal for second place woman in short course. I won a T-shirt. LB won a new Jantex paddle with a paddle bag. My wife found a really cool hat. We have tons of pictures. Right now I can't imagine doing this again until they come up with a fountain of youth drug. I'm so stinkin tired. But in a week I'll be back to my studly self (long term loss of short term something …)

This year, again, it was the biggest throw down on the west coast. I'm really proud of this t-shirt. Now for nappy-time.

And congats to the rest of the Canucks that made it down! Nice race Gareth, Daryl, Shane, Bob, Warren, Jonas, Nathan, and Matt… Kathleen, nice decision making, for sure. Awesome representation, um, I hope that you're all hurting as much as I am this morning. Nice paddling with you but, um, Bob next no time no dancing on the tables at the lounge OK?!

Big Thanks for Cali Trip

I owe a big thinks for all the players that made the Cali trip great. Caption LG for organizing the truck/trailer and majority of the details (hey, all of us got boats hauled by Larry owe the guy beers for at least the next year), LB and RD who shared the driving and bad jokes (oh, to be a fly on the wall…)

The Cali crew that paddled with us and kept as going in the right direction. Thanks to Tanner, Ocean Paddle Sports Crew (congrats to DeAnne who won in the new hot XT making her have the most overall wins at US Champs - maybe I need to paddle an XT next year!!!) and all the other locals who took us out and showed us the goods - don't make us have to ask you twice to jump on a plane with a break-down paddle and spend some down time in the PNW. Big thanks to the Helen, Big Wave Dave, and the entire race crew for hosting the event and keeping all the racers safe. See y'all on the water soon!

We drove back home early Sunday morning with 16 boats on the trailer. This meant that we did not stay for the doubles race or the relay. After Saturday's epic conditions, I think most of us had enough paddling in. We left at 7 am and didn't get to Bellingham until almost midnight. Traffic south of Tacoma was the worst culprit.

The race itself left a few of us wondering what the conditions were going to be like. It took place during an ebb tide when most of their races had been during a flood. Reivers made a good choice for the leg out to the Bonita buoy by going closer to mid-channel and getting a stronger current. We had to paddle upwind once we hit the bridge with wind waves as high as 4 feet in some spots. Pt. Diablo was one of the mixed up areas while the other one was just off Pt. Bonita. However, these parts weren't near as sloppy as last years race. After Bonita, the water flattened out and could be considered calm by Pt. Bonita standards. One paddler flipped at the buoy and lost his boat when his leash failed. He was paddling a rented boat and he ended up being a DNF. The return trip back to the bridge was the tricky part because you were forced to choose between riding waves or getting out of the ebb and finding eddys. I went in between and I think this was my second mistake. Once we reached the bridge, we thought that we had made it through the worst part. However, it didn't turn out that way.

After passing Fort Baker, the water starting doing that chunky monkey thing that Reivers mentioned. There were currents from 3 areas converging making it like a washing machine. I was alongside Penny Locke from Australia and I told her not to worry because it would flatten out real soon. It didn't. In fact, it was worse by the time we reached the southern tip of Angel Island. There were rides to be had but it was a bit technical. I think some of the paddlers stopped to bathe here. There was a rip we had to pass through near the buoy off Angel before we got into the good downwind run. I chose to paddle south and line myself up with the finish line for the run in. I think this was my 3rd mistake since guys that were behind me dog-legged their course towards Berkley and gained some time over me. I did catch two guys right at the finish after catching one of the larger waves and riding past them.

The two paddlers that had all the right stuff that day were Reivers and Daryl Remmler. Reivers was ahead of Putnam at the Bonita buoy but came in behind him at the finish. Don't know which boat Daryl was paddling but he showed up several top paddlers with a strong finish. Morris also appeared to have improved over last year. There was only one U.S. paddler in the top 10 and that was Greg Barton.

Each year the Wavechaser crew improves on how they run the race and once again they did a spectacular job. This year they placed three buoys between Angel Island and Berkley to help guide us in. They were also great hosts during our stay. Many thanks to Helen, Dave, Craig and the rest of the crew for all their efforts of putting together a world class race.

Congrats to Larry Bussinger for getting first place in the Golden masters division. Oh course, you do need to know that he was using my 10“ Kiesling surfing rudder (which I was missing dearly on some of the bigger waves sets).

Hi everyone, I just want to give a heartfelt thank you all for all of your kind words and for supporting the US Championships year after year. The Champs just would not be the same without you guys!!
We're collecting a bunch of photos and a recap or two and, of course, Rambo's video. Stay tuned…

Till next time and thanks again–

Helen

Larry- Every day is its own challenge, but Good move on the last leg, I think. if the wind has any south to it, its safer to go right as much as possible early on after Angel Island, even heading for emeryville instead of berkeley, IF you can stay on the wave. you do not gain anything, even loose places at first, but it sets you up nicely for the finish. The wind blows even more from the south after you get past treasure island, the closer you get to shore (usually). coming in you can look ahead to the flags on shore, see which way you are going to get shoved and how hard. those who are to the north often have little choice, sometimes paddling south along the rocks in slop to get to the finish, though some lucky (skillful) bastard did just that saturday, scooting in front of me, I never saw him until the last moment.

I did an article on the race, hopefully will appear on surfski.info.com soon.

Good paddling with you folks-

-John Dye

My mantra, as you remember from an earlier post, was Fun + Forward = Fast Finish. After 10 minutes, I gave up on the fun part. I never stopped the Forward, and I settled for Finish! It was seriously challenging water and intense focus. I had no idea of where I placed until I got to the finish. The conditions are so radically different than what we paddle in. None of the posts so far does justice to what was happening out there. The channel wasn't over the top, but challanging. Bonita Buoy was better this year, just short, steep 5 footers on the swell, but smooth (almost like standing waves). Fort Baker to Angel Is. was three foot river chop from the current out of Raccoon Pass. The Blunt Pt. buoy was a river of a completely different color. White foam and wave faces so thin the sun was shininging through them; good 3 - 4 foot white water. The rides from Angel Is. to Berkley would have been fun (mixed wave pattern of 3-4 ft)except I'd already been paddling hard for two hours and could hardly hold my arms up. Reivers's time was phenomenal; I have to give him bragging rights even though I did get first in Golden Masters! Being older though, has few other benefits. BTW, to set the record straight, the drawing I won at the end was for an EPIC paddle, so hats off to EPIC sponsorship. (Got my picture with Greg!)

Thanks Larry G for the ride. At least you didn't dump me for another room mate like Reivers. :-)

Also hats off to the race committee and the volunteers and safety boats.

Last boat in, yep, that would be me. So, why am I happy about that? Because . . .

-The setting for this course is the greatest, most challenging, and flat beautiful! Ya shouldda seen the porpoise charging our bows!!!

-The Wavechaser crew are gracious and organized as can be. Dave Jensen, Scott Kelly, Helen (the most devasting smile ever) Workman, Brent (chicken wing) Rietz, and all!!!

- One of the most talented fields ever!

- Evergreen Greg Barton proving, again, that he is our greatest paddler!

- All of the racers that inspire with their athleticism and determination.

- Special thanks to Mike (boat daddy) Martinez and his crew for not hauling my sorry old butt off the course when I was like a Kebab on a rotisserie off Pt Blunt!!!

I've got only one little question. How the hell does Larry B keep winning all the cool prizes????????
See Ya Next Year, Mike.

Hmm, I see that Ole Larry got what….$250 for over 60. Well now, I'm thinking I might dust off the ski and see about that for 2011. I liked the look of that course. Dean wil be on the water as well, I'm sure.
