Sausage Pull 2012

I paddled the Mercer Island Sausage Pull for the first time this morning. It was a fun event, though it seemed to be an upwind slog for about 3/4 of the race. I had a decent start and after Shaun Koos retired from the race around 4.5 miles I found myself alone out front of all the single skis. I built a pretty good lead pacing an OC-6 for 2/3 of the course resisting the temptation to just ride their wash the whole way.

Around 11 miles I started to fade and John Day made a good push to close the gap in the sloppy chop around the north end of the island. I caught one good run under the I-90 bridge and took advantage of the flat water south of the bridge to “sprint” the last mile to the finish and beat out John by 30 sec or so. Paul Crivell of Seattle was third and the kid who flipped his K-1 last weekend at Samish was 4th, paddling a surfski for the first time.

I think there was 7 or 8 skis altogether, including Michael Dee and Roger L. Peter Turcan and Egor Klevak were second overall in a double, and Brian Boatman and David Williams were smoking fast in their OC-2. There were dragon boats and pedal boats and OCs and shells and a paddleboard and an old guy in a rowboat. Good times.
