Hi Everyone-

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to Eric Gerstl and Epic Kayaks for the paddle. Also, thanks to everyone in the paddling community for making me feel like part of the group. I had so much fun today, the Howats put on another great race!! I can't wait to put the paddle to good use in two weeks at my next regatta.

Thanks again!

You're very welcome, Ana. JD Davis from Waterwalker (dealer for Epic kayaks & OZone outriggers) donated the new paddle. I got to be the lucky one to give it away.

Enjoy!

Here here! Awesome to see it go to good hands… Now make us regret giving you such speed weaponry.

Hats off to those responsible for organizing the race today. That race start was borderline clinical. My only complaint; Someone said there would be snacks at the bridge, but when I got there I didn't see any. Maybe next year?!

results are up…..and shouldn't it be DJ the line jumper and Don the rudder maker?

Well it took me a little longer than I had planned, but I have the results of the MOST IMPROVED at the 2014 Lake Samish race:

The time is the improvement from 2013 to 2014

1st - Dennis Mowry: 8:04 (Sea Kayak)
2nd - Brian Flannelly: 7:40 (Single Outrigger Canoe)
3rd - Jeff Davis: 7:13 (Flatwater Racing Rowing Single)
4th - Phil Helms: 6:19 (High Performance Kayak)

There's more, but it's late and the kids want to put together their Arctic Explorers Lego kit, so I'm off!

Thanks again everyone for coming out today - great racing and fun vibes!

- Amy

It's great and fun to compete against each other. I certainly do better when there's someone just ahead of me, (thanks Duncan for the draft most of the race) as well as when someone is trying to pass. I couldn't of made as much improvement without the encouragement and advise from everyone.

The real race though is against ourselves, a tough competitor, to make an improvement each year. Why not compete against each other competing against ourselves? Yes, I did create this category thinking I had a good chance, since last year as I was just starting but I also know others made great improvements. Next year I might put up another $100 for most improved, in the 62-63 age group.

I had no intention on collecting on the winnings.
Congrats to Brian, Jeff & Phil, I suggest we pass on the winnings to them, $50, $25, $25.
.
Thanks Amy for doing the extra math work, and to Duncan and all involved including the racers for putting on a great race.

You had a great race Dennis. You walked away from us at the end like we were standing still!

Another young racer worth a mention
Steve Scoggins

He's humble, he's strong, he's 14 years old, 6'+ and named Cameron. He is one of our youth team leaders and paddles a K1 at a fast pace, typically 200-1000 meters. Last night he decided he wanted to race today and asked to borrow a ski. As a testament to his balance, he took a Fenn elite glide, raced 6 miles and finished strong. Pretty impressive. Keep an eye out for him on Padden as he works toward the Barton challenge gold(that's right….another whatcom youth paddler doing the challenge).

This is also a testament to the hard work Dan Baharav has put in, creating a team that is growing strong young paddlers that can sprint in K1 yesterday, and pilot an elite boat the next for distance. His dedication is tireless and impressive.

I want to thank everyone who has supported the youth team, BCKST, either with money or time, or just good ol' fashion support. We are slowly building an arsenal of fast, quality boats, and quickly building some fast kids for the next generation of paddlers. Basically, what I'm getting at is…..it's working, and there was proof out there today. Good job Ana and Cameron!

Well said Steve.

I hope Mickey and Beth someday hear what a great tradition they started with Lk Samish race. In the hands of the current team its become the star of the season for any paddler with a need for speed. Ribbons and hot spots are great, but there's just nothing like hanging with active, outgoing, sports-minded folks. I'm having a good year, but it wouldn't matter anyway: the energy after from everyone is so great. I missed David S. and LB, but fantastic to see all the new competitors. We had everything out there: excellent rowing crews, a rowing wherry, war canoes, OC boats, pro-boats, …

After the race I heard a surfski paddler approach a war canoe team and apologise for messing up their corner at the bottom turn. So cool that original paddlers get in there with us. Best of all to see we are working against our own personal limits and not making this sport something against each other. It's the finest thing about a great competitor, to struggle hardest against their own limits.

I put some of HIlde's snaps in a new folder “2014 Samish Race”. We miss Michael Lampi's great action shots (Check sound rowers.org for older race history).

Thank you Duncan, Peter and the hosts of “game-on” volunteers. For extra credit next year, maybe dangle beers from the bridge.

And…..can't believe I forgot this one….12 year old Zach Williams. The kid did Bainbridge in a dugout canoe in some pretty sloppy water, and came out yesterday, riding the course solo. 12 years old. That's rad.

Also … not as young, but still pretty dang young in my eyes, was 19 year old Nick Zeegers who was following in his dad's footsteps (or should I say paddle strokes) by competing in his first ever paddle race using the family OC1. Congrats on a strong showing Nick!

That was a very nice day, thanks everyone for coming and particating. Amy Trowbridge deserves and special thank you for all she does for the race, which is, registration, web site, prizes, timing, and results. All the critical stuff to make it work. Thank you all for the kind words about the race. Next year, Steve Scoggins,( Rudy“s Pizza) will be running the race and will continue to need all our help to make this a fun event. So tomorrow at 10;30 group headed out to portage isl. Forecast is no wind, making for a smooth easy go over and back, some newer paddlers are going also. Duncan

A big thank you to the Howats and Amy and Peter and everyone else involved in the organization of the Salmon Row!

Peter, you made me work for that little blue ribbon which, amazingly, means just as much at 58 as they did in grade one. As I said to him at the finish line, it was admirable the way he moved left as the DJ and Don double passed us on the right in order to prevent an illegal was ride. And the hotspot. I was warned about Michael M and was wondering where he was as we approached the bridge and I heard people above yelling “get him Peter”. Peter? Peter! I'd forgotten about him and then all of a sudden there was this red Huki on my right. If it wasn't for the heads up from the people on the bridge the hotspot money would have been yours. Anyway, if I do the race again next year I'll put it back in for masters men category. I'm on my way to La Venatana. I hope to see Kirk, Sean, Kim and Duncan down there again this winter. This season I've teamed up with Daryl Remmler and we've started the Think Paddling Center - Baja. We have the Big Eze, Ion and Uno Max available for rent. Flat water mornings and downwind afternoons.

I would like to say yesterday's race was amazing in many ways that I'm sure all of you can appreciate.

I wanted to send a huge thank you to The Arthur's for the magic ride, the double that knows how to be up front and stay there. Also, Erik Wermus thank you for setting a long and strong pace that Pulled us out in front of the salmon row field one stroke at a time. As we glided under the bridge out in front, first and hear the crowd cheer was exhilarating! No hot spot for us, as there was only team Swetish in our category ( mixed double). Then graduating reeling in some of the rowing shells one by one, staying strong knowing that DJ and Don K would be hungry to catch us. We rounded the lake. We went back thru the bridge, still no DJ and Don, we rounded the corner and crossed the finish line ahead of the kayak/surfski field. It was really nice to cross that line without being caught. Thank you Erik for leaded the way!!!'

Cheers. E
