Paddle for Food 2008

(Peter Marcus's New Race/Benefit Idea)

natty218@earthlink.net
10/08/08 #5123

Hi All,

Just tossing this out……I have wanted to put some kind of “Paddle for the Food Bank” outing. Either a relay format with oc's, canoes and surfskis or a general paddle/fundraiser for food on some SOON Saturday Morning at Lake Padden!

Any suggestions are welcome……any contacts you might have for the raising food is welcome! We could get the Herald involved to raise awareness!

Any feedback??? I like the relay idea, three times around lake Padden (approx 6 miles) for a canoe, an Oc, and a Surfski, for a total of 18 miles….you could switch any leg, i.e. surfski goes twice an oc goes once, a canoe team goes three then back to the surfski and oc. What ever stratgey works….first team to 18 miles with each boat doing three laps would win….entry would be five or ten dollars worth on non-perishable groceries!

We could all pitch in “like two dollars” to buy three dinners from Anthony's (they might donate them if they know what is for) for three random drawn teams!

What do you think????????

Regards, Peter

Hi Peter,

Don't want to crash your party, but some rowers may be interested in this too, especially since it's on protected water. Each team consists of a surf ski, an OC, and a canoe? It seems to me that there are a lot more active surf skiers out there than either OC's or canoes (especially OC's). Perhaps a rower can substitute for one of those boats? Just throwin' it out there.

John….I like your idea. We could assign numbers to all boats that
show up: Surfskis 1-25, Kayaks and canoes 26-50, rowers and tandems
51-75. Then each team would have to have 1 boat out of each number
group. Random teams. I'll pitch in for a prize for the fastest team
(case of wine?) and the slowest team (case of Orville Bedwetter's
Popcorn). Just an idea….

Let's do it! Peter, I'll help organize, if you like. Mike G.

I've got two 5' 5“ buoys and some other buoys that would work great to mark
the course, also a small skiff with an electric motor to put them out.

Donations from Anthony's is tough. Since they're a corporation you have to
go through “the process” - they'll hand out free app cards like Pez though.
It's easier to go to a local restaurant for donations - Cliffhouse is
better anyway.

Woods Coffee would probably be glad to help, Fairhaven Inn (free overnight for two?) Village Books, Bob's Burgers/Brew, Jalapeno's, Boundary Bay…
hell, I think there'd be a lot of willing establishments to help out with this…

Pete, I'm willing to help on this one. Start organizing. Is it going to be a row/paddle-a-thon? Why not a 24-hr event? Make it big. I have a feeling that if the Herald publishes this, that you'll need and get a LOT of help. But, let's do it before November… (wind).

Call a meeting: date, time, place.

Dale

Hi Larry………Sounds good……I like the idea of putting all the boats into the hat and forming teams on the spot….what about odd numbers left over and we could give each team as they form a team the same number for the whole team so we can keep track of everyone going around the course??? Peter

John Rybczyk

The only problem with the putting-the-names-in-the-hat scenario is that it's very unlikely
that 33% of the boats that happen to show up will surf skis, 33% canoes and 33% OC's.
Thus there would probably be several teams made up of just surf skis since that would likely
be the most common boat. The only way to ensure three different types of boats to a team is
to form the team beforehand.

OKAY….your all in!!!! Anything going on October 25th or November 1st????? Is this enough time to get organized??? Lance R. Do we need permission from the P.D. for this????

John, Rowers are welcome, the more the merrier……although the turns will be tight!!

SOoooo….teams of three boats, any surfski (yes doubles…), any Oc's (yes doubles), and any canoes (preferable doubles) and a single rower (doubles would be too fast and if you missed a turn you would blow out the bank and end up in the baseball fields…) could take the place of any of the first three…..Total of 18 miles??? Each boat must do total of three laps, any order of boats and laps as long as each boats does three laps (but all the same direction you “contact guys”….) Entry will be 5/10 dollars of non-perishable food that I can haul down to the food bank. Random prizes for teams???? and the winning team????

Lets keep it simple this year….not too many details….because the weather this time of year could foul this up easily!!!

Sound good so far?????? P

Pete, can I send this to soundrowers… or do you want to keep it very local?

After being out on the lake for a couple hours this morning, I'm
struck by how blessed many of us are to have a fairly comfortable
life style that includes some fairly pricey toys. I would like to
encourage you to join in next Saturday's event to help others in our
community who are much less fortunate than many of us and who don't
have their basic needs met at this time in their lives. Peter
suggested bringing 5-10 dollars worth of food to donate to the Food
Bank. It is my understanding that the Food Bank also takes 'real
money'. Wouldn't it be great if we who live in this area and who are
able to do so, could step up by bringing our cash or checkbooks and
giving back to our community with dollars or food in amounts way
above what Peter ever imagined when he suggested this event. Perhaps
if you are not available to paddle that day, you would consider
dropping a donation off anyway, so that we as a group can show how
much we care about the area in which we live.

Don't mean to be 'preachy', and I don't expect everyone to feel the
same as me, but felt strongly that I needed to share my own thoughts
on this one.

Thanks,
Rick Lingbloom

Just a note on Rick's post: Peter needs you to email him in order to
get organized. He's taken this thing on where he assigns slots to
people. Help out by giving him early notice of who is in.

4 Bottles of Wine!!!!!!

Larry Goolsby
10/24/08 #5247

Good news is that there are 4 bottles of wine for the winning team of
the food relay. Bad news is that Brandon and I get to pick who goes on
what team. Also, if we get an uneven number of paddlers, you may be
requested to paddle a tandem ski (there will be two extra at the lake)
with another paddler. THIS IS FOR A GREAT CAUSE SO PLEASE TRY TO COME
OUT AND ATTEND….

Nadja
10/24/08 #5248

So, the needy get canned food, and those of you in expensive toys get
the expensive wine?! C'mon, donate the wine, and you eat the canned
beans for dinner!!

Larry Goolsby
10/24/08 #5249

Uh? Who said anything about expensive wine? Besides, we are donating to
the food bank and last I checked, there is no wine bank.
