Did we subsidize the food bank?

That was quite a surprise, Peter. Last minute arrangements with
unknown messes of various boats and what a hoot. The guys putting
teams together were brilliant. The lead kept swapping around and
really, this was more spectator friendly than maybe any paddle race I
can recall. I think we had all the paddle type boats represented, (K-
1, Surfski 1's/2's, OC-1's/2's, C-2 - I guess we didn't get a C-
1)… Not sure this is a good venue for rowers.
My initial thought was that the course was too small for a real
race. Totally untrue, that was what put the intensity over the top
and with hand-offs and strategy made the format exciting. The set up
makes it so that a lot more people can join in. And not just the big
dogs. The LeMans start was thrilling. I nearly coughed up my liver
trying to show a good start.
There's more, but I'd be foolish to give away all of my penetrating
observations. We need to do this again and maybe not wait a whole
year for it.
Most excellent fun today. I have a wad of photo's to sort and post.
Soon.

What great fun. I second the motion that we do this again sometime. What about the
possibility of running one or two Wednesday nighters this way next season?
Great organizing, Peter.

Ditto! Well done Peter! I would not hesitate to bust out my overly expensive, self centered play-toys to help out a worthy cause with friends again. Shoot, I'll even bring my surfski next time… ;)
Connie and I had friends that were forced to make use of the food bank recently and they were treated with dignity during a tough time. There are good things happening there.

I couldn't agree more with all that's been said. Kudos to Peter; thanks to all support
volunteers and “sponsors”. I'll be back (which was where I was; at the back…..),

Hi All,
Almost 600 dollars in donations and about 300 lbs in food donations made this day quite the “reward.” The weather gods smiled on us and the relay format was really fun to watch and figure out which strategy to use for team hand offs!
This is an event that is really going to grow…for a good cause!
Thanks everyone for all your help. Thanks to TABAR (Winter Gloves) and Running Shoes.com and Uncle Larry for the “old Country” Vino….also Lance Romo and the Parks for the equipment used!
See you on the water………Regards, Peter

excellent race format for a good cause

Peter needs to start a second career organizing races. He does an
excellent job! Racing for a cause is always a great idea. I really
liked the professional timing clock and big triangular buoys.
(thanks Lance). The club needs to buy a couple of those buoys and
get a clock. Like Reivers expressed, this format of a race is
probably the best there is for getting everyone involved and
enjoying the race atmosphere. It was exciting to have other “rabbit”
boats out front that you'd try to catch, only to realize that you
went out to fast and blew yourself up. The just under 2 mile lap was
perfect for racing hard and then getting to rest. The venue was
excellent. So many possibilities exist for making Lake Padden an
exciting race venue. Adding the Le Mans start again, adding short
portages, barbecue afterwards, etc.. Thanks too to the swag people
(Jim from RunningShoes.com, Dan donating the gloves, the wine, the
gel, gatorade, coffee etc..) I especially liked seeing the kids out
in the boats. I think Devon Bumstead is already faster than me. We
should try to incorporate more kid friendly activities at the races.
We could have had a floating pumpkin patch!
