Lake Whatcom Classic History

David Scherrer Apr 22 #33623

Surprised Pete Wells hasn’t put his 2 cents in… as he started this race back in the 80’s. Reason it was that original long distance was so it would be recognized as a “classic “ category canoe race. I think that meant a minimum of 17 miles. No kayakers showed up in those days, or rowers. But did have canoe paddlers from all over. Very cool this event has continued with various organizers over the years!

In touch with Pete via text - he's on the road. He says started in 1983 - all pro boat canoes. He says he's got some photos of the start.

Photo from early Lake Whatcom Classic. Pete Wells was the organizer and didn't race. David Sherrer took the photo. He said he was standing on a step ladder on a boat (also didn't race). Didn't say what kind of boat. Nobody around here knew what a surfski or an outrigger boat was. There were some names thrown around, “Bowers”, “Anderson Brothers”, “Williams”, This race was down to the old resort and back - 18 miles. Some rough water for pro-boats. I've raced some of the guys mentioned. Them good boys paddle rough.

Thanks. What year do you suppose this is? Mid-1980s?
