Classic

Way to go Lance. If there were any race management crisis, they stayed in Los Vegas.

Rick and I in the double weren't quite close enough to the lead pack to see their shenanigans. We tried to keep our cool about how easily Jeff Hedge and Dean were keeping up with us and how some OC-2's were so much faster. Eventually we reeled in a couple of OC-2's and ended up in a puke-your-guts-out duel with these guys over the last mile or so. The lead swapped several times. We got 'schooled' by one of the OC-2's they did a really slick juke-move and then hammered like madmen to get a couple of waves away. We climbed back within one wave, but could not hold.

I don't understand it, but that was the best. Each guy totally maxed out - everything down to bone simple: go like hell. I guess I can't be 39 again, but at 59 I find myself savoring these times like I never did before. I hope everyone is as buzzed as I am right now.

Today was a good day.

Sweet Reivers, sounds like you had a great day on the water.

Assuming attachments can be made they should be here. There were a few muck ups, but I think they're ironed out OK. It's possible my version of Excel is unique in the world. If you have difficulty opening it or there are other issues, please let me know or check the results on Sound Rowers. It's sorted into 3 pages; All Results, Short & Long.

If you have a number please bring it to Wed. or the P&R office in Cornwall Park. Jeff I have your paddle.

Thanks for coming out, thanks to our volunteers and thanks for Joost for the advice.

Peace & Chicken Grease,

From the near front, it was turning into a total strategy race. First, I loved the surprise start, we weren't ready for it but I still loved it. Shaun and I coupled with Morris and Debbie on the way down the lake and traded off leads as one boat would rest just to keep out of the range of the singles. Except for Ian, most of the top paddlers were drafting a rower that got bogged down when the waves increased in size. Ian had his own race going and after the first 15 minutes, I don't think that we were even racing in the same state. Brian B. and big Dave were hammering hard in their OC-2 and I was having doubts about getting past them. Eventually we managed to break away from Brian's OC-2 and were soon caught by Brandon. As we neared the island, our tandems were pulling Brandon and Joost. The race back showed us that Brandon was only using us for a breather and he took off with the Arthur's tandem on his flank. We had to paddle hard to maintain a draft behind the Arthurs and eventually lost our attachment to them. They ended up finishing with Brandon about a minute ahead of us (Great race Brandon and Arthurs) and Joost finished a few 10ths of a second behind us, with the Boatman OC-2 not too far back. Don't know why but this race was really more of a race than previous Classics but it wasn't the drudge that I remembered.

Thanks Lance, even us short course folks had a blast!

What was up with the kayaker yelling at the finish line folks about people “not stopping to help a capsized paddler?” Was there some drama that I was too far-behind to see?

Actually I must confess that Susan and I did go for a little swim about half way down the long course in a borrowed OC-2…But many folks did stop to offer us help as we scrambled to climb back on our machine..no drama, well not much anyway..the look on my partners face was pretty dramatic at the time! Any way it made the race even more fun to catch back up to our competition…

time adjustments?

Lance,

Some boats stopped to help other boats. Was that taken into account in the times posted?

Personally, I saw Greg and Susan (Dutton, Horst) stop to help a surfski and then again to help an OC2. Bob and Ann (McBeath, Thistle) also stopped to help - at least the OC2. My guess at the time lost is on the order of 5 minutes, but it is really a guess, because I was late to the scenes and paddled on.

Great! Although I was just in the water adjusting the pedals on my ski, Greg and Susan did stop and offer assist (they thought it was funny - I was not amused), Steve B stopped too. So, I think they should get at least 10 min off their times. They were soo helpful. Ok, 15 min! That would put them ahead of Brandon and the Arthurs!
