La Conner race report 2013

what a great day. We usually get freezing cold plus the falling damps. Everything has been scrubbed clean with recent rains and today had that crisp clear look. The Olympic range and Mt Baker were sitting pretty in their dress whites.

There was a rumor that Duncan was heavily 'roided for this race so I did a lateral arabesque and jumped in a double with Debbie Arthur. It was genius. Debbie took the smart end (with the steering) and we outfoxed the start pretty well. Alan L and buddy in OC-2 carved a good line and we were actually ahead of Tracy L and Heather for a while. Until I got excited looking for them and almost dumped us in the water. Oh well. Got my shoulder wet, but at least I didn't damage my reputation.

Things were less wonderful once we made the big turn. The fast doubles went wide left and I thought we could make up by staying right. It worked for a few minutes, but then we got into suck water shallows. Had to watch people get away from us. We weren't that far back from Tracy and Heather, but couldn't climb onto their draft and settled into a grind. After the turn buoy going with the current seemed strange. Our speed kept going all over the place. We tried right, middle and left channel. It just worked out that current had changed mid-race. Quite confusing. Typical La Conner. This race has made monkeys out of some great paddlers.

Huge turnout. Michael L's photos will probably be spectacular. Super easy conditions, well run race. Soup and cookies after were just phenominal. The awards went crisply. All the men were giants, the women were stunning and all the kids were above average. The results are aparently already posted, check Soundrowers.org.

You might just casually notice that Debbie and I won first mixed double. Huge race for Kirk. Duncan's deer antler treatments worked and he schooled Michael M. Paul and Marc must have pounded on each other quite a bit. Probably a few other 'hair-on-fire' duels going on out there while I was trying to keep up with Debbie.

Next race: Bellingham Rough Water. bring it.

Many thanks to Greg Glida and Kristin and the rest of the crew for putting on a great event!

Now for something a little different, I was just watching this great little short film, and it reminded me of all the essentials(and then some) of a good La Conner race experience…..

Ride home VERY SLOWLY (stop for lunch in Edison)… arrive home, kinda nap and twitch for a while and pick up boat, washed and spiffy. Very nice! Thanks Debbie!

During the race I drafted Marc most of the way like the lame guy I am and finally made my “move” to get onto Alan's OC-2 then they dropped me (okay, his driver pinched me at a huge log I think because Alan and I were talking) then Marc threw a kettle ball into my boat as he went by. The rest is recent history.

A very good day overall!
