HOT 5 Week 2

Great racing by everyone who participated in the sprints last night!

Wilson came up big, Dennis braved the K-1, Julie paddled surfski, a ton of kids showed up and Jonas was just faster than everybody. I'll send out a more detailed report tomorrow, along with updated Series Standings.

Wow big re-shuffle of usual order of barnacles. Interesting.

Those 1000 meter Sprints were a lot further than I anticipated. Quite the workout, for me any how.

Also thinking how those kids in the first heat are like haft my size as an adult, which would make that Sprint a 2000 meter relatively.
Amazing to watch them all in the their sprint boats, besides having so much skill, fun and enthusiasm.

Thanks Kevin and all for putting on such a fun race.

Orange to Orange is about 1100m; within 10m is the really tall branchless tree to lillypad orange…

Yes, the 1000 meter course may have been a wee bit longer than advertised but that just makes the finish times even more impressive.

Thanks to everyone who raced and donated! Its exciting to see a sport where 8 year olds are competing with 80 year olds. In the 1000m surfski race the top 8 spots were less than 10 seconds apart, and half of those were over 65! Youth dominated the day as Jonas, Elena and Emma/Trisha posted the fastest times overall with Wilson and Ana close behind (Peter was in the mix too but was out-sprinted at the finish).

Thom showed some serious horsepower and beat out Marc, Dennis and Dean for the top spot in the Senior Masters. Maybe we should send him to Nationals next year…

Toby Cooper came all the way from Orcas Island to race and Denise continues to improve in her first year of paddling.

For the Series Points I scored each race as half the normal value then added them together for the weekly total. Heather and Peter are tied for the top spot with Wilson close behind. Only a few points separate the top half of the field and there is lots of racing left in the series so its still wide open. Final scores will be the best 4/5 races. Next week we will be back at Marine Park, enjoying the sunny weather by practicing our remounts. There will also be an optional swim finish for extra points.

I also want to mention that, in addition to Jonas, Elena and Emma, two more Bellingham paddlers will be at the Olympic Hopes Regatta. Sierra and Milan from the Lake Padden Sprint Club will also be headed to Poland next month. Congratulations to all!
