THINK paddle

Daryl Remmler of THINK kayaks has generously loaned one of his new paddles. Let me know if you would like to try it out. I'll be at the Wednesday night race.

Congratulations to Brandon for pulling out the win this morning at the Dan Harris Challenge against Gareth. When they crossed the line, most of the other single HPKs were still in another zip code. Bravest move goes to Kirk for sneeking between the rock and Dot Island to gain some serious boat lengths-sneaky@#*!

Kirk left a train of boat wrecks and broken heart rate monitors. Someone I didn't reckognize passed me just before the island, but took the cut and grounded. When I passed around I saw him standing in the shallows drinking - maybe it was whiskey to drown his sorrows. He never caught back up.

Very interesting race. That start was a huge melee. There were some dang big rides just back from the leaders.

What is the consensus: better comming back along the wall or better going way outside looking for rides? I went outside, but my speed showed me working against an outgoing tide. I'm not sure how bad it hurt me because I was in a gap between packs and didn't have any references.

A well run event: fast results, good food right away, lots of fun schwag. Somebody should have called the border patrol to bust the Canadians with taking all thier booty back. Pretty fun day.

Dan Harris Challenge: Stop Inventing Boats!
John Rybczyk

The results from the Dan Harris race are posted to the race's web site. Bob P. and I will commiserate vis a vis the International Challenge scoring and get back to you soon. Thanks to all those who participated; another great turnout and a beautiful day for a race. And thanks to all the volunteers who made it easy for me.

The hardest part, by far, was posting the results. Good God there a lot of boat classes. I officially declare a ten year moratorium on inventing new boats and new boat classes. We're already up to four different surfboard-type classes, and Ken M. was out there with a hybrid Kayak/Surf Ski/SUP boat that defied classification. On the other hand, I can see a future where there are so many boat/age/gender classes that everybody gets a blue ribbon, so that would make it easier for me and other race directors.

In the end, it was heartwarming to see all of the camaraderie, good sportspersonship, and friendly competition. It was truly a privilege to put on race for such a fine group.

See you on the water,

johnr

So, there was this guy out there who looked vaguely familiar like I had seen drawings of him or read a book in which he was a prominent character. I thought maybe… but no, I must have been paddling way too hard to have seen what I saw. On further reading of the results, it became clear. At least I can say I passed him late in the race.

I must say congratulations for winning his division and with a very respectable time as well. 1:28:43 is darn good given the propulsion. Check it out.

pretty funny!

** Editor - looking at the race results we see that 1:28:43 was turned in by Matt Kelly and we wonder what he was paddling??
