Race Round Bowen 2013

Well….from my standpoint with limited experience, I would say the water felt big and messy. It was beautiful scenery. My finish time was not good, but I had a good time. I think it is appropriately called the Bowen “Challenge”…..it's pretty mean. I certainly had a tough time with the final stretch, so I focused on that scene from “cool hand Luke”, when Luke is getting his ass kicked but just keeps on standing until it's over.

I'll do better next year, I promise. Hats off to the rest of the Bellingham crew, Strong finishes by them. Morris and Debbie won a candy bar, which probably tastes better than a trophy, but I hope they(Bowen folks) relocate the trophy, as they deserve to be etched into the history of the challenge.

Big “thank you” to Martin and volunteers at Bowen Island.

Great day, great race!

Here are my notable points :

  • Gabe crushed the singles record by several minutes. (Amazing….)
  • Don K was with Gabe the first half of the race and then took his own lines to finish a strong 2nd
  • There were 28 single HPK's and 6 tandems plus OC's, sea kayaks, SUPs and a prone paddler (ouch!)
  • Some strong currents could be found if you looked for them (strong ebb at the start), no big wind or waves and some chop here and there.
  • The Arthur's paddled .5 miles further than any other boat. (Morris was very proud of his tactical decisions.)
  • Dean came in with some of the top dogs and looked like he could paddle forever.
  • Lots of strong Canadian paddlers (Gareth, Shane (owe you another beer), Dion, Bob Woodman, Mike F, Chris D, Daryl R, Bob P, etc)
  • Our friend, Richard from Maui did his first NW race.
  • Mark W was as strong as ever finishing with some of the fast guys….
  • Mike G had a solid finish…
  • Steve S ….Wow! I don't think any of us would have done this race after being in a ski for just a few months. Great job!
  • Salmon was excellent. Chocolate awards (made on Bowen Island) were eaten J
  • All participants were given a handmade mug (also made on Bowen Island). Very nice!

GOOD Job to all Bham paddlers last weekend, from the post race updates I got at work it sounded like the race is back stronger than ever - described as 'sloppy', 'long haul', & 'a good grunt'! Special kudos to Steve for stepping up to the challenge after only a couple months in a ski & Gabe for setting the new course record, wasn't it Joost who held it prior?
