BC cup #1 Burnaby

11 members of BCKST traveled to Burnaby Lake yesterday for the first race in the BC cup series. The kids did awesome. The races were mostly 200 meters, with 1000 meter for Men's open and 500 meter women's open. Almost everyone got PR's and over half the team present stood on the podium despite intense weeds.
Standout performances include but are not limited to;
- Neha Harle, Emma McCoy, Ava McFarland….all of these lady's cut over 9 seconds off their Fall 200m time……that's a pretty big gain for a short distance.
- Molly Spilker, Ellie Scoggins, Mia and Talia Clarke all trimmed 5+ seconds off.
- Mia Clarke and Ellie Scoggins went K2 against the next age group up and came in less than 1 second behind their big sisters…….talk about smiles all around(everyone but the big sisters, that is).
- Abby Scoggins was able to get back on the line with her old nemesis, Cassidy Mc“fierce”Phereson. These two have been battling for over three seasons. Thanks to the intense competition, Abby was pushed to go sub 57 seconds for 200m. Relatively unheard of for a 10 year old girl.
- Jonas Ecker paddled tough in a variety of races. Most of the available races for him were in the open category against grown men equipped with beards and giant deltoids. They were competing for the provincial team trials. He showed some serious grit and determination, going sub 53 in a 200 while making salad on his rudder. If he can do that now, I can't wait to see what the season peak brings.
- Sierra Noskoff and Elena Wolgomot decided to take a day off from their goal of 1000K in 6 weeks to do some sprint racing. After a week of double daily distance slogs, they shifted gears and do some amazing work. Sierra took 2.5 seconds from her fall TT, and Elena competed against the open women category, grabbing third overall in the 500 at age 13…..very impressive.
- Lastly……HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE. For the first time, BCKST put a sprint canoe in a race. It wasn't pretty, but Abby and Sierra managed to get a tippy C2 across the finish line to the throngs of cheering teammates.

Steve….The big award should be for you.You've brought this team to a level they can be proud of. Your work makes the rest of us grateful to be part of the same community that these athletes belong to. Keep up the awesome work.
