A to B 2011

A to B……….

Bumpy, brutal, not as fast as previous years. Don't know if we hit the water a bit late, but the current ran out of gas about the time we passed Lummi Island. Dean gets the 'smart-guy' award for sneaking between Sinclair and Cypress islands, and then catching up with the lead pack. Larry B. decided to take some of the heat off Pete Wells and headed for Samish Island. Lucky for us, we had a safety/paparazzi boat that found him way off course trying to hump a tanker. Kirk won overall after drafting for 99% of the race. He was the only one that looked fresh at the finish. Morris and Deb were second having made a good strategic move (paddle straight for B'ham instead of taking the scenic route) and taking over the lead after Carter Point. My gps showed 21.94 miles, and our maximum speed was only 11.2. Lots of weeds, some rain, a NW wind, and great food afterwards at the Arthurs. Thanks for the invite.

It was huge strategy. I saw Dean heading along the south of Sinclair and it was gutsy. He had to fight current all around it to get to the good stuff on the other side while everyone else was cutting distance to the end. I've done that route twice and it's demoralizing for a while. The timing has to work perfect because if you don't get around into the good stuff in time then you are in suck water all of the way home.

Morris went high tech and polled everyone's GPS into his computer. Then he ran the computer version of a “dot-race”. At first it was clocked as if everyone was going about 350 mph, but he fixed it. It was weird to watch Dean's dot going slow, being gapped, then start smoking up to everyone else.

One other thing: this year is was big gains to go North of Eliza. I've never believed in that route. Boy was I wrong. I wasn't too far back of the Wakeland double until they went North - I went South. Unfortunately MG, Roger and LG/Shawn did the same route as me and paid for it.

Next year I'm bringing GPS. (Can I just send in my Dot? - I'm hurting today.)
