PNWORCA Winter Race Series #4 2023 - Peter Marcus Memorial

Peter Marcus BBOP Winter Series Race
Kimberly Reeves Feb 25 #33243

I wanna tip my hat and say job well done to Janice Lapsansky, the BBOP Race Committee and all of the club volunteers. They pulled off an amazing event under difficult conditions. Thank you for your hard work and gracious spirit.

Also, big shout out to the paddling community that came together and paddled today in cold conditions to honor our dear friend, Peter and his family.
It filled my heart with happiness.

I second Kim’s comments. Great job. Awesome community. I felt Peter‘s spirit there today.

I’m pretty sure today was one of the biggest cold weather paddling turn outs anyone has seen in a very long time. A perfect morning that Peter would have loved. I held it together until I saw his motor boat being used by the safety crew. That got me a little. Great battles all around, I got a front row seat to watching the 3 OC2’s battling to the turn. Watching Kai and his wife battle (4 days after a chemo treatment) was humbling. Thanks BBOP!

The OC culture rocks. The pre-race blessing and then the prayer were excellent. So many of us miss Peter. He just quietly got a lot of crap done. It's like when you are walking downstairs and there's a step that isn't there anymore. I had a pretty lame first half, ended up in a train crash at the rocks that so many found. But got my groove in the second half and snuck by a few. Todays rock-star barnacle was LB. Give this guy some flat and he kind of “hulks-out”. There were several doubles. Simon and that young Lee boy tore it up. (Mike Lee's son.) Minnie, Erika and Denise W. got more bling for their “ego-wall”. The soups were A-mazing. Someone in the OC gang does this thing with sticky-rice, seaweed and pork or something that lights my fire. Cookies. Lots of Cookies. And yes, the youngsters went barefoot. crazy kids. don't they no nuffin. Dan Mayhem almost reeled in dMow, but dennis heard him sneaking up. In the three-pack of OC-2's there was a photo finish. Talking to Alan L afterwards, that last half was a full-hammer war. Kai B might have beat alan's boat by a few inches. I think Alan's boat ahead of Paul C's by a foot or so. Have to look at results to be sure.

Today was just so good. So very good. Thanks to so many good peeps. And this wonderful sport.

Reivers, that was Spam Musubi. Sarah Tanuvasa made it today, and Jill will make some for Peter's celebration of life tomorrow. Peter loved it and called it Spam Sushi.

dude! that stuff is crazy good. If that shows up at more races I'll be moving down in the pecking order because of body mass.

Sounds like a great event yesterday! Congrats to everyone - racers, organizers, volunteers, and cooks! We've been thinking of Peter a lot while on our trip in Greece. Sorry we can't be there for the memorial event today. All of his community efforts were both fun and beneficial - Rough Water Race (whether rough or not), Paddle for Food (even when done remotely), and the sorely missed Paddlers' Film Fest. What a huge, inspiring example to follow. We miss you, Peter! Big, bigs hugs to Julie and his family.
