This, my friends, is why you need one of those stickers on your craft.

So I got the story on the canoe. My friend Afa Tuaolo was paddling about a half mile offshore of Keaukaha (Hilo area) about 10 days before the canoe was found floating. A large manta ray flew out of the water, and seeing it coming, he bailed off the canoe, only to have the manta land on his ama and canoe. The ama was crushed and the hull was fairly damaged and starting to sink, so he ended up having to leave the canoe. I'm not sure if he swam to shore alone, or if he was paddling with others and they towed him in.

When the fishing vessel found it, they were unable to tow it fearing it would break apart. It is speculated that they found it submerged, over 100 miles from Hilo. they pulled in up enough to partially float and take the photo, then had to abandon it again.
