Pre-Paddle Grand Prix Race #3 Results!

The final Point Series Race hadn’t even left the beach when things started getting hot and juicy! With two races down and just this one to go, Joost Zeegers and Alan Lipp were tied for 1st place. The theme of “musical boards” that had characterized the first two races was on display again, and it looked like Alan had victory all but secured when he showed up with Beau’s 18-foot Bark.

But the crowd of other racers was calling for a more even match-up, so Joost and Alan agreed to race identical boards: Tom Swetish’s 14-foot prototypes. Oooh, now it was ON!

Following Race #2’s 4.3-mile course out of Cornwall Beach and onto the PaddleGrandPrix’s oval track in front of Boulevard Park, Joost and Alan jockeyed near the front – but it was Brian Boatman on another Swetish creation that held the decisive lead! Under the Taylor St. catwalk, back around the Star Rock buoy, and back to Taylor St. Brian fought off a closing-in Joost, and the two of them steadily began to gap Alan.

The crowd watching from Boulevard was thick, the evening air was hot, and the paddlers put on a throw-down clinic for everyone to enjoy! On the final stretch back to Cornwall Beach, Joost took a closer-to-shore line and finally put some space on Brian, ultimately taking the win and securing the overall win in the series. Alan held on for a strong 3rd place for the night and 2nd in the series, and Brian’s 2nd place last night gave him 3rd place in the series.

In the woman’s division, Heather was back on her C4 Vortice for the night and finished 1st woman, 6th overall for the night, and 1st in the point series. Jessica Yoos on a Starboard Pin placed 2nd woman for the 3rd race in row, ending up 2nd in points. And Michele Anderson held tightly to her 3rd woman and 3rd in points.

The pizza and watermelon feast after the race were devoured down to the crumbs as awards were handed out to the top finishers. The NW Paddle Surfers hoodies were top choices by series winners, followed by Mt. Baker Ski Area lift tickets and free entry into next month’s PaddleGrandPrix!

Thanks everyone for coming out and supporting the Point Series, and for helping to create the SUP racing community in Bellingham!!! See you on September 5th at Boulevard Park for the Paddle Grand Prix!!!
