-So I beat the Larrys.  Never mind that I could not blink for the first hour of the race.  It was chunky monkey all over the place.  The wind picked up like Dale mentioned and with the slight ebb it was different than I've ever seen.  It was a bit surprising who all took a dip.  I was dueling with a guy we met down here named Jeff and by golly Jeff took a swim.  He came back strong, but I caught a better wave at the finish.+So I beat the Larrys. -At the pre-race they said if you don't get a good first half out and back to Ft Baker, then you better bail out on the race.  Kathleen wisely did just that.  MG stayed strong and we counted his nobby head coming across the finish.  LB finished strong, but was found muttering profanities and wandering around in the parking lot.  LG picked in between lines rather than gamble and ended up with a mid-pack finish.  I finished ahead of him so he says I'm walking back - no ride home for me.  It was worth it.+At the pre-race they said if you don't get a good first half out and back to Ft Baker, then you better bail out on the race. -DJ smoked the first part of the course, but could not keep the hammer down.  I would give a nut for his race, but he is subdued about it and not his usual bubbly self.  Morris and Kirk must have stories - hope they share with us about some.  For most of us it was the sum of mistakes that told the result.  Because it was rough on every segment people were scattered all over the place.  Now that we are done and have beer in us we think we could do it in half the time.+DJ smoked the first part of the course, but could not keep the hammer down.  We drove back home early Sunday morning with 16 boats on the trailer. This meant that we did not stay for the doubles race or the relay. After Saturday's epic conditions, I think most of us had enough paddling in. We left at 7 am and didn't get to Bellingham until almost midnight. Traffic south of Tacoma was the worst culprit. We drove back home early Sunday morning with 16 boats on the trailer. This meant that we did not stay for the doubles race or the relay. -Larry-  Every day is its own challenge, but Good move on the last leg, I think.  if the wind has any south to it, its safer to go right as much as possible early on after Angel Island, even heading for emeryville instead of berkeley, IF you can stay on the wave.  you do not gain anything, even loose places at first, but it sets you up nicely for the finish.  The wind blows even more from the south after you get past treasure island, the closer you get to shore (usually).  coming in you can look ahead to the flags on shore, see which way you are going to get shoved and how hard.  those who are to the north often have little choice, sometimes paddling south along the rocks in slop to get to the finish, though some lucky (skillful) bastard did just that saturday, scooting in front of me, I never saw him until the last moment.+Larry- Every day is its own challenge, but Good move on the last leg, I think. if the wind has any south to it, its safer to go right as much as possible early on after Angel Island, even heading for emeryville instead of berkeley, IF you can stay on the wave. you do not gain anything, even loose places at first, but it sets you up nicely for the finish. -My mantra, as you remember from an earlier post, was Fun + Forward = Fast Finish.  After 10 minutes, I gave up on the fun part. I never stopped the Forward, and I settled for Finish!  It was seriously challenging water and intense focus.  I had no idea of where I placed until I got to the finish.  The conditions are so radically different than what we paddle in.  None of the posts so far does justice to what was happening out there. The channel wasn't over the top, but challanging.  Bonita Buoy was better this year, just short, steep 5 footers on the swell, but smooth (almost like standing waves). Fort Baker to Angel Is. was three foot river chop from the current out of Raccoon Pass. The Blunt Pt. buoy was a river of a completely different color.  White foam and wave faces so thin the sun was shininging through them; good 3 - 4 foot white water.  The rides from Angel Is. to Berkley would have been fun (mixed wave pattern of 3-4 ft)except I'd already been paddling hard for two hours and could hardly hold my arms up.  Reivers's time was phenomenal; I have to give him bragging rights even though I did get first in Golden Masters!  Being older though, has few other benefits. BTW, to set the record straight, the drawing I won at the end was for an EPIC paddle, so hats off to EPIC sponsorship.
