Downwinder 1/05/2020

I went down to MP at 10am ready to rock. Quite a few empty racks - somebody must have been out there. Sat in my car for a while. Kayak polo guys showed up, set up and played. Watched kayak polo guys. Suddenly noticed some little specks out on the water. It was 8 downwind guys. Looked like one surfski (Dmow?) and a herd of OC-1's. They roared by towards the plywood plant. LG showed up in the parking lot and sat in my car. “We need to talk”. He pointed out the little water tornadoes. Too Big for Little Reivers. I drove home and took off my dry wetsuit.

Dan M, myself, Romo, Marcus, chased Collin S., Wilson, Olney, Jonas and Lee/Lipp from Wildcat to Squalicum Beach. Big, big, big. I know this will sound exaggerated, but those were some of the biggest waves I've paddled in on B'ham bay. Take out was an adventure with high tide and 3-4' shore break dumping right on the logs. I sure hope someones GoPro was running when I got annihilated. Me and Jonas lost hats, Lipp lost his booties. Good times.

Gonna brag on Wilson for a second and post his splits (sorry W!)… anything sub 3:30 is the beginning of world class in my opinion, and these are some fassssst times! Guess all that time in South Africa is already paying off:

The takeout was a Sh!t Show. High tide floated and bobbed water-soaked logs along the beach while easterly gusts whipped boats sideways. Hopefully someone captured some film fest-worthy video.

Also, Alan Lipp’s new OC2 sail is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. He’s looking for a volunteer to hold the breeze-catching apparatus while Alan paddles and steers from the back seat. Contact Lipp directly for details.

17.4kmh is 10.8mph. day-um.

Exactly Reivers, and that’s without ground swell which is a massive speed advantage.

Compare those numbers to a 50 year-old paddling an OC1 🤣🤣🤣 Wilson and Jonas blew by me and I never saw them again.

Wilson and I are both running kilometers, but to say the least all of us were flying!

Not sure exactly what this chart represents, but the gold medal K 1 time at the Rio Olympics was about 3:31.
