On the long course, Mike G. was the first HPK, Gabe & Lance were the first OC2, and Marc and I paddled the African Queen to a 1st place in HPK 2 … OK, we were the only boat in our class, but we posted a respectable time … in fact I think it was a course record for HPK 2's … OK, I lied about that part. Now who am I forgetting? Oh yeah, Larry G. Not sure what was going on with him … he said something about having hot flashes and not being sure if he was in the womens race or the mens … can't remember exactly how that turned out, guess you'll have to ask him.

+It was pretty cold in Medina and I over-dressed for the race (poagies and all). Right after the race started, the clouds parted and we got hit with full sun. Before we could cross under the first bridge, I couldn't open either eye because of the sweat pouring off my forehead. I found a beach and parked the boat while I removed my poagies, dipped my head in the lake and sucked down a bunch of fluids. I was only out of the game for about 4-5 minutes but it was enough to put me in the dead last position for the long course. I could have paddled back to the start and been counted as doing the short course but Duncan had already headed that way and I wasn't ready to let him beat me. So I continued on the long course and eventually started catching other boats. I picked off 3 rowers, a tandem outrigger, and two really fast women on surfskis. The surfskis gave me the most grief because I thought that they were men and it took me 5 miles to figure out that they weren't. Congrats to Mike G. for securing the first place in men's surfskis and I heard rumor that Don. K (in a K-1) beat out the duo in the K2 (same guys at Lake Samish). Peter Turcan later told me that they also overheated. Even though I ended up 3rd in surfski, I still had a great race because I had lots of rabbits out in front of me. The east side of the lake was hot because we were traveling with the wind but when we rounded the south tip and pushed into the wind, it was like someone handed me a tall glass of lemonade.
