Avila Beach (San Luis Obispo Bay)

Nicholas Cryder - “ Avila beach is a seriously rad set up btw. It's situated in the lee of the prevailing winds, with a large mountain and a jetty that makes it a piece of cake to do open ocean downwinds back to the mainland where a paddler can pick conditions to match their ability and ambition (hopefully both). On shore, there is easy parking, great eats and truly chill vibe. Getting on the water is no different than launching at Marine Park (Bellingham, WA) on a modest day.”

(Ed. It may be worth mentioning that Nicholas subsequently seriously hurt his shoulder in his surfski in the surf at Avila. We don't know what size surf there was that day, but it does not take a lot along with you getting into the wrong position to cause damage)

Downwind Runs

  • N-NW Swell/Wind (Paddle upwind for about 1.5 miles to Point San Luis/Whaler's Island then turn downwind)
    • (All distances below are for the downwind portions of runs)
      • Avila Beach - Shell Beach ~ 2.5 miles - distance depends on how much you go out/upwind video
      • Avila Beach - Eldwayen Ocean Park ~ 4.5 miles video, Downwindfun
