Big thank you to Gail, Duncan, Gwyn, Mike, Amy and the entire crew that make the amazing bbq possible last last!

Truly an incredible story of survival by Charlie last night! The key to early survival in the cardiac resuscitation chain is early CPR and defibrillation. If you want to save someone’s life, become proficient at CPR. What Beau and Mike do in the back of an ambulance is amazing, ER and ICU teams can cool people for therapeutic hypothermia and keep the most critical patients alive, our cath lab team can stent at anytime of the day or night- but all this is meaningless if someone does does get early and effective prehospital CPR. If you believe in supporting effective & efficient EMS care in Whatcom County, then please continue to support Bellingham Fire and EMS at the ballot box so they stay well funded. Surf every wave life it might by your last.

See you on the water-

Here here DJ! Thank you to the Howats for their immeasurable hospitality – and Lucy Jean for the incredible serenade!!!

As for Charlie, it's truly a miracle he's still alive. No chance of that without the first responder who knew enough to crank out that 13-minutes of chest compressions, OR without Charlie's world class level of fitness at 71 years old. Two weeks ago he's at the pearly gates, and now he's rowing again. Way to set the bar, Charlie!!!

HI All- Don't know Charlie's story but sounds similar to my experience back in November. I collapsed after a training paddle and Luanne pumped my chest for 19 minutes. The docs gave me a 3-6% chance of survival and thanks to early CPR I am here writing this email. Below are some links if you are interested in more details of the story. I am alive and well and paddling again. LEARN CPR!

Charlie walked up to me last weekend while we were on a different call at Sunset Square. He said; “hi, you guys saved my life last weekend.” That's powerful stuff. The true hero is whoever the rower was (maybe from Skagit) who performed flawless CPR on Charlie on the motor skiff all the way back to Bloedel where fire & EMS were waiting. That guy was amazing.

For those who couldn't make this awesome social, that Charlie was a friend of Duncan's who was a special guest. Fortunately, his recovery seems to be spectacular, other than some very sore ribs that interfere with his sleep. Appreciation for those who were concerned about me, but it belongs to him.
