<> ===== Westerlies 11/7/23 ===== (This is just a discussion about forecasts and conditions - no actual trip report) **Reivers Dustin** 11/06/23 #34679 I'm feeling poopie about tomorrow's West Wind. The whole bay gets full of rebound due to reflected waves. All you stout youngsters can go tear off a piece and post up about it. **Duncan Howat** \\ 11/06/23 #34680 Sounds like a electric powered leaf blower to me. Or it could just get nasty. **Eric Grossman** \\ 11/06/23 #34681 Do you mean with these? Surely it will be good between Governors and Wildcat - with perhaps extra energy coming through Hales Passage! otherwise Birch Bay. **D. Thompson 11/06/23 #34682** \\ [[https://www.facebook.com/groups/BirchBayPaddlers/permalink/2611411612368752/?mibextid=2JQ9oc|https://www.facebook.com/groups/BirchBayPaddlers/permalink/2611411612368752/?mibextid=2JQ9oc]] **Reivers Dustin** 11/06/23 #34683 Birch Bay might get rock-a-hula. Lots of fetch across Straights of Georgia. As far as Wildcat - Governors, that's a north-south line. no good in a Westerly. real good in a Norther. **Dan Mayhew** 11/06/23 #34684 I've had some nice paddles in Westerlies. Straight out to the weather buoy near the south end Portage Island and surf back to MP. Am I missing something that is privy to our our more experienced paddlers? Does it turn nasty over a certain mph? **Reivers Dustin** 11/06/23 #34685 I just have childhood trauma issues. There's a waveshape because they develop and run straight into the bowl shape of the bay, then rebound back out so they get short and steep with some noise mixed in. Tomorrow is actually light air, so it's not so bad (if it stays light air). But if it gets some steady 20 plus, it becomes a shit-show off any vertical shorelines (like drydock, the wall, etc.) But maybe its just me that it doesn't like. **Eric Grossman** \\ 11/06/23 #34686 It seems the graphic I emailed earlier didn’t transmit, does this one show wind speeds (green color) and directions (arrows)? This is 1-km HRDPS forecast for tomorrow at 1000 local time, 16Z. Winds predicted to decrease after.\\ Eric {{ :weather:westerlies.jpg?direct&500x595 |westerlies.jpg}} **Dan Mayhew** 11/07/23 #34687 Probably should consider the Nooksack flow into the chaos factor. It's at around 7 ft today, which doesn't sound excessive. The wind predictions have come down so we could be looking at fun waves with some playfulness near shore. Of course optimism can lead you into a real s#+*show on the bay. See some of you at 10. **Reivers Dustin** 11/07/23 #34688 This forecast is very different than "Igetwind", "Ikitesurf", or "Bellingham Kiteboarding" Those are showing dead Westerlies, not NorthWester. This should be interesting to see what actually happens. **Eric Grossman** \\ 11/07/23 #34689 Looks like a very different story in BBay vs Birch Bay! So interesting and complex to forecast here.\\ {{ :weather:birchbaywebcam.jpg?direct&500x230 |birchbaywebcam.jpg}} **Paul Reavley** \\ 11/07/23 #34690 The Birch Bay webcam hasn't updated for me since 9:19 but it looks like it is rocking there. European model indicates it will still be good until at least about 2 pm. **Duncan Howat** \\ 11/07/23 #34691 Just finished battling that big west wind towards portage fight against 4 inch waves going out about 3 1/2 miles out turned and caught the 2 inch waves coming back with maybe no wind however the water is gray from the Nooksack so that’s troubling other than that\\ a great morning **D. Thompson** 11/07/23 #34692 Around 10am: The report from my upper deck confirms good size breaking 4+/- footers from the SW diminishing as the wind clocked more toward WSW with Birch Bay in the lee and moving the best DW runs quite a bit outside the Bay. **Larry Goolsby** \\ 11/08/23 #34693\\ Reivers….Have you tried the weather site 'ihavewind'?
