Michael Lee **babyrebozo** \\ 01/19/17 #20504 What in the Wide World of Sports is going on here? You can tell it's winter 'cause there seems to be a severe reach to find things to talk about! Anyway…….for your sake…….I hope things pick up!! BTW- If you are up at Jericho this weekend……Mike and I will be doing OC-2. Mike will be up front…….there's a reason for that! Pete **John Rybczyk** \\ 01/19/17 #20505 Oh great, now you've ticked him off. johnr **Nicholas Cryder** \\ 01/19/17 #20507 There are hippos that hang out in the surf in Africa. THAT would complicate things… but not for Pete. **babyrebozo** 01/19/17 #20508 Nooooooo…….John……you've got me all wrong! Having a giggle with it all, just like most everyone else. Just don't want folks to think I'm putting the hurt on Big Mike! Pete **duncanhowat** 01/19/17 #20509 As we all know the big power goes in the back of a outrigger or a marathon canoe. Of course thats were Pete sits when teamed up with Mike. Another distinguished, probably true story of "the man, the myth, the legend,) Pete W, was that in the first Mt Baker Marathon, he paddled his solo canoe up the Nooksack River, up and over Nooksack falls, up to where the ski area is now, ran up the back side of Mt Baker, was first to the top, ran down the Roman Wall then all the way to Bellingham and was first in , but was disqualified, for suspected PED's (He was a leader even then) but this was never proven so he should have been given the win. Morris and those guys doing it now don't come close to his time which was 6 hr flat.I can see a trophy in Pete's name coming up for the best, mostly true paddle story. Slow day at the Ski Area. Medium Wave Dave **allipp01** \\ 01/21/17 #20515 You just don't crush the field like that unless Pete is in the canoe! Nice race. But, but, an SUP is only a minute behind you? Who is that masked man in the cape? Larry B **Jericho '17 \\ Reivers Dustin** \\ 01/22/17 #20518 Big crowd, but only four surfskis. Looks like this Outrigger thing might be more than just a fad. Lots of stalwart young men and beautiful, fit young ladies all tearing up the course. Warm, very light breeze, slight flood tide, overcast with sun breaking over the downtown lighting up the metro area and making the towers shine. The snow line helped emphasize the mountains that crowd North Vancouver. A really beautiful day for a race. Pre-race sign-up and orientation was crisp and organized. Although, they did not take checks or credit cards and U.S. currency was accepted at par. That stung a little because I had dropped my baggie of Canadian money by accident in the dark when I was leaving the house. Present exchange is about 75%, so a bit of a surcharge on my entry fee. The race start was clean for most. The safety boat used flags for 5 minutes, 1 minute, go. I heard that Beau got tangled with an OC-2 at the start. There were some low swells that ran through the start line. I couldn't tell if it was from shipping traffic or what. A mile or so into the race some consistent waves started building up from the Northwest. By the time we got to the Bell Can which was the outside turn around, these waves were bothersome to work against. I had been trying to hang with Beau and a pack of OC-2's and 1's for this first half, but not quite finding my rhythm. The waves were quartering from the right so the boat would corkscrew and change directions. Even with this trouble we were clocking 7 to 7.5mph. I had hopes for rides after the turn. The turn was work for me, but the rides were there. Except they carried too much to the south, so you had to try and angle the waves. It didn't work because the waves were too fast. I couldn't quite stick a ride and stay my line. I saw quite a few folks get seduced and turn for a great ride, only to give up ground to get back on course. I managed to sneak by Beau - basically I was overclocking myself trying to work the rides. I was gaining on Chris and Shane in here. Once we got to the last mile I don't think anyone changed the gap much at all. Talking to those guys later I found out Shane had shoulder problems and Chris has been frozen out of paddling much lately. Chris stores his boat outside so the rudder has stayed ice-locked. Hot soup and cookies plus a little schwag after. Nice shower facility. Fun crowd. The race director talked about the loss of our brother paddler (Peter) last year from cardiac arrest. Peter's wife and some friends were there in support and it was a good moment. Maybe it was my imagination, being the older guy, it felt like people were looking at me and trying to remember where that defib device was. rd **babyrebozo** 01/22/17 #20519 We need to make note of impressive OC-1 debuts by Beau and Peter Marcus……Bellingham is getting more boats at the front. As for myself, I tried the whole race to get by Mike, and couldn't pull it off! Beautiful day for a race, and after being away for a couple years, it was great to see Minnie and Ernie, and some other old friends. And always a pleasure to paddle with Mike……. \\ he my Bow-Bitch!! \\ Pete **lori & beau whitehead** \\ 01/22/17 #20520 That SUP'r who was 11th turned back early. Only did 4 miles of the course. I didn't realize that was an option (-: Reivers came to my rescue when I found out they weren't taking US checks… He had to thumb through a bunch of $100's in his wallet but managed to find a $10 & a $20 for me. Saved my bacon. \\ (….)
