===== Todays Race...Bhan Bay (not Really Rough) Rough Water Race 2019 ===== **Pmarcus** \\ 03/23/19 #24518 That's a Wrap for 2019....Some really good racing went on today out on the course, whether you were in the middle pack, back pack or the lead pack. Really fun to watch the start as 100 plus boats narrowed into a Congo Lline as they went past Taylor Street Dock and on to Cornwall Beach and the first turn. Conditions were what was forecast although we had strong Southerlies off and on the prior Three days and we ended up with a light Southerly, with only an occasional boat wake! Really nice to have an Aussie and a bunch of Canadians come down from the Island and Vancouver to mix it up with us today!! Some great races coming up at Vancouver Island and in Deep Cove as well as the NEXT Sound Rower Race at Lake Sammamish as well as the Dirty Dan Harris Race in Bellingham in a few weeks!!! A lot of new faces did the longer course with most of the fleet getting some race distance in (some prepping for M2M), only one casualty due to a mechanical failure taking the Team of Boatman and Lee out of circulation from the lead pack. Some super tight finishes with a lot of Oc's and Surski's fighting it out with rowers as they came across the line, a lot of 1 to 2 second separation finishes!! Awesome turnout by one of the local OC 6 clubs, BBOP providing Three Canoes....Cool!! Results will be on Webscorer later...some of the categories got intertwined with some Men and some Women and Mixed boats ending up in the shuffle as I tried to create categories but didn't succeed, sorry! Awesome food, Thanks Hilde and Reivers and Dorothy and cookie makers and Jill for the Delish Sushi, Thanks to all the volunteers too, Julie V., Christos and Kim W., Christie, Paul C. and the Community Boating Center and Gary S.!! Also an all star class of safety boats, Nate and Steph, Chad and Griffin and Chris, Mike and George and Dean B and Larry P and Crew. and for Race Sponsors Brandon Nelson Partners and Walker walker (nwoutrigger.com) Loved how everyone pretty much hung around after the race too, an awesome "subdued excitement community with a paddling problem!" Thanks to All, Cheers Peter **Kevin Olney** \\ 03/23/19 #24519 Thank you Peter and all the volunteers!! https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=173750 **Jonas Ecker** 03/23/19 #24520 Thanks for an awesome race Peter! **Elana Ecker** \\ 03/23/19 #24521 Peter, volunteers, our community. Thank you!!! Peter, Thank you for organizing this wonderful yearly event that we all look forward too. Thank you for the countless hours that goes into planning such an event. You make it look easy! Love the shirts !!! Volunteers, thank you for feeding us, registering us, timing us, making boat wakes to mix it up, saving us, decorating us (really cool medals and key chains) and for cleaning up after us... Community, thank you for coming together far and wide and supporting one another of all ages and stages. A wonderful example for our youth that being active is a way of living and you can have fun doing it. Personally, I wanted to thank each and everyone that made today possible. Today, I had the amazing opportunity to race side by side with my 16 year old J.E. and what a joy that was! Given I was in a double surf ski (thank you E.W). Racing side by side with J.E filled my heart with such joy to look over and see him as others see him, look over and see him dig deep and race hard. Then when my partners paddle flew out of his hand and our double was sidewise showing her underside he glanced over and said “u ok?” Yes, I calmly stated as we were fighting to not capsize. Off he went racing his boat as a strong contender. At the finish line, there he was to cheer as we crossed the line and the horn sounded. Great racing!!! Thank you Bellingham paddling community for this wonderful event. I’d rather be no other place... E. If I recall correctly someone in a wooden rowboat had their phone out, taking pictures (I don’t know) when myself, Jamie, Kevin and Egor/Peter crosses the line, any chance there are photos from that part of the race?
